As you may know, Linux is a free, open source operating system.

    I didn't until a little earlier today.

No. I went for the Linux instead.

    Thanks for explaining 🙂

Also, if you fall on hard times, financially, you could implement 'Saucy
PW's Site Of Sexy Fun'. Complete with forums, a members area, a shopping
cart system for racy videos and soiled walking gear it would be sure-fire
success. I for one would buy Peewiglet merchandise such as a miniature PW
action figure with detachable walking poles and 'realistic kung fu grip
    action'. Think about it.

Hey.... what a great idea!!! :-)))

I've put you down for 3 Action Peewiglets and a 'Nasty the Nematode'.

The Open Source movement gains another convert. Good on yer, PW. :-)

Very many thanks to all for the hosting suggestions. I'm about to make
a coffee and then go and browse around the various sites you've
    suggested 🙂

I went for 1and1 in the end. Thanks again, y'all :-)

Just a quick word about 1and1.

I've rung them a couple of times this afternoon - once before buying
their basic webhosting package to ask for further info, and just now,
to check on something else, and I've been very impressed by how
helpful and available and friendly they actually are, quite late on a
Sunday afternoon. On the basis of my short experience of them so far,
    I'm v. impressed indeed.

    They're at www.1and1.co.uk

    Another quick question re: this.

Does anyone know the difference, in practical terms, between Linus and
    MS hosting?

Hi pw, you've already had a few replies in this vein, I hope I can add
a little, and may be make things a little clearer?

The technical stuff and anti-commercialism stuff that's been posted is
largely irrelevant (as far as this discussion goes). Linux is great
stuff, but here's not the place! ;-)

The only thing(s) that need to be considered are the practicalities
and M$ hosting offers no unique benefit (at the jobbing-user level)
that cannot be matched on a Linux-based server. M$ servers are more
prone to virus attack (because that's the system that the virus
writers concentrate on). Web pages on a M$-based server need the
webpage.htm extention rather than the more usual webpage.html (but
    this is no big deal).

    From a basic web-site user/writer's point of view M$- and Linux-based
    are much the same.

Linux-based comes into its own when you start to biuld on the sites
content; anything using "php" (huh? wassat?) just won't run on a M$
system... php-based packages (that you can just take out of the box
and use) are mostly free and are an easy way to build your site
content... an example of soemthing that you might find useful is a
photo gallery application... if your site was/is linux-based you can
easily set one up/have one set up for you...

I hope that I've not muddied the water too much by adding the above!
    ;-)

Aksherley...that's not true. I teach an 'Introduction to PHP' course
and the college server is M$ Fasthosts also have PHP running on their
'doze boxes. More likely to be the database you have problems with.

That said, I'd go for a LAMP[1] system any day.

Still, I'm glad to have been made aware of the issue 🙂

I'm not surprised actually, but it wasn't something that was available
the last time I looked and I wasn't aware of it when I posted (show's
how much notice I pay to M$ web server stuff - me no likee!!)

    ;-)

sorry.... that is just so-oo off-topic even by off-topic standards in
this group :-) apolgies, sincere apologies, soz all!!

PS its still true that to drive the average web site you don't need to
worry too much about what's on the inside (you prolly won't need to
touch it anyway). Running stuff on Linux does make things easier for
you (generally) if you want to pick things up later on.

I know about it because I had to write some code for a friend who has a
Fasthosts account. But there were too many restrictions and he ended up
getting a Linux account. If you are with M$ you are tied in to their
proprietary way of doing things - .NET and so on

    Says it all, really.

I have some web space with Demon, not the cheapest but very reliable.

I used to be with Demon, but they went through a bit of a nightmare
patch re: email a few years ago and I eventually left.

likewise. I think Demon managed to alienate many of there original
customers when they tried to compete as a 'big boy' ISP rather than a
'techies ISP'. FWIR it was down to financial pressures on Cliff &
resulted in selling out to Thus. I wonder what became of him & his
    money?

This looks OK; it seems to be a Pipex cheap service - but as good as you
might need. Various costs here, all much better than they charge me for my
    old account!

I use them to host my domains for which they are excellent. IIRC they
have a more professional hosting offering that was HostEurope (pre Pipex
take over anyway) that had a good reputation for small business hosting.

    Quoted message said:

That's where I looked a couple of days ago. I tried to ring them, to
check wehther they offered the few things I actually need, but when I
rang customer services for the info they told me I had to ring the 50
pence per minute support line instead, just to get info about whether
or not I wanted to give them my business or not! What is it with
Pipex... so at that stage I decided to look elsewhere.

Don't blame you. "Please pay me to sell you my services"? Don' t think
there marketing guys have quite thought this one through!
