Something's been bugging me since coming back from Thanksgiving dinner with
my family, and I'm not sure how to handle it.
Up until this time, I've gotten so much support from friends and family
about my woe. While some friends voiced their skepticism in the beginning,
they now see proof that low carb has really been good for me.
So, at Thanksgiving at my brother and sil's home, we were getting ready to
leave and my dad, who BTW suffers from heart disease (2 heart attacks and a
quadruple bypass) and is an insulin-dependent diabetic, put his arms around
me, looked me in the eye, and said that I should stop losing weight. Mom
echoed his remark. I was so taken aback! Everyone else there told me how
great I looked, but I get the impression that my parents think I DON'T look
that good. (At dinner that night, I did allow myself about a half cup of
dressing, some sweet potato, along with turkey and the other low carb stuff
on the buffet, and a couple of bites of pie---didn't like the pie because it
was TOO sweet! So noone can say that I was being obsessive at dinner!)
DH tried to explain it to me that my dad has lost a lot of weight since
becoming diabetic and suffering from heart disease. He said that Dad may
equate weight loss with poor health. DH also offered that maybe they feel
I'm becoming obsessed with it (I do use Fitday pretty religiously to keep
track of what I've eaten, but I don't feel that makes it an obsession.) I
have been sharing my weight loss progress with my parents when we talk on
the phone, but that's only because after years of being obese I'm so excited
to see results and to feel better.
So, lately I'm not watching carbs so much, but I am keeping my calories to
an average of between 1200 and 1300. I guess that I'll keep this up,
privately, and not mention anything more about it. I still want to reach my
original goal of 160. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
