OK, I'm doing my first marathon on Sunday. I started training in May.
There is no rain in Sacramento from March - October, and it's warm to
ungodly hot during that time too.

Just looked at the forecast, and it's supposed to rain and be in the low
50's on Sunday. Any stories on running in the rain - does it affect
    your run very much?

    The rain falls mainly
    On the plein,
    Or just
See: "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,"

"Many families have at least one
    fairly mad family member, whether
in or out of an institution. But
    the families do not normally
    consult the mad
    people even if they have lucid periods;
the families do not go to them
    for advice.
    The Murchies were different.
Dan and Great Murchies swore by the sagacity
    of Dan's elder brother, Magnus.

    'the insane were considered
    divinely illuminated."

Should make it cooler and more pleasant if it's been hot 😉 If it's a
road marathon, you probably don't need to worry about mud. Enjoy.

When I run in the rain for a long time, my singlet gets soaked and
heavy, tends to cling to my body more, and I get that painful nipple rub
    and bleeding.

Good luck in your 1st thon.

  5. Same here, try "nip guards" for your long rainy runs. In my case,
anything over about 12-15 miles requires some sort of "protection".

You might consider carrying along an extra pair of socks to change
into halfway. One negative effect of rain is the increased chance of
blisters when your socks get wet.

As a precaution, I would also apply lots of petroleum jelly around the
    toes before the race.

I dont like autumn rain. It can make it hard to stay warm and aggravate chaffing.
I sometimes get shivers when I run out low on blood sugar after mile 20 or so.
Carry some extra clothing ot keep warm.

  10. Sounds like you're doing Cal International...good luck, it's a great race.

The forecasts I see for the area call for some light rain, which should be no
big deal. If for some reason there's a giant downpour, don't panic or let if
freak you out. Try to get by with as little clothing as possible (the more you
wear, the wetter you get and the heavier all the clothes will be). I'll wear
some gloves in the rain, if it's going to be a "cold" (relatively speaking for
us Californians) rain, and that works for me (my hands seem overly sensitive to
the cold, and rain just exacerbates it).

Some vaseline and/or Body Glide in sensitve and chafe-prone areas will also go
a long way to being somewhat comfortable.

Remember to stay with your hydration plan--I know of folks who seem to forget
that even when it's cold and rainy that hydration is still paramount,
    especially at longer distances.

Anyway, very good luck to you...let us know how you do!

    Dear AOL,
Below are several messages posted to the newsgroup rec.running. These are only
a few of todays off topic messages, a few of hundreds posted by her in the last
few months. This Virginia person has been repeatedly flooding RR with off topic
posts of her psychotic poetry. She has been repeatedly asked to stop, but it
seems to have no effect on her. I understand she is a published poet, however
RR is not the place for this. I fail to understand her motives, since she is
continually rebuffed, yet just continues flooding the NG with these bixarre
messages. The below messages are two of todays ramblings, most days there are
dozens. Please check her posting history.
Can you please ask her to cease and desist?
    Thank you,

Yeah, I'm looking out my window and it's starting to cloud up now. I
purchased a light weight long-sleeve pull over, it says it's made of
Climalite. The sales chick said I could wear this over my regular
shirt, and tie it to my waist if I get too hot.

I am worried about chafing in my thighs. I'm pretty stocky, and the
last 18 miler I ran I had scabs after the run. It was hurting on the
last few miles, definitely put a damper on the run.

I think I've got the hydration thing figured out, didn't have any
problems on a 20 mile nor on an 18 mile run.
