  1. Hi,
I am new to this forum, and wanted to get some advice as to my
running. I have been running off and on for a few years, and have
gotten pretty serious in the last two and half months or so. I'm up
to about 15-20 miles a week, with my longest run of 7 miles. I feel
pretty good after the runs, I am just having a hard time getting my
speed up! It seems like I am stuck at about 10 min/miles, regardless
    of the distance.

I am hoping to do a 1/2 marathon this spring. I am not really sure
how best to train for this?

I have about 10 lbs to lose still, but have been getting in much
    better shape. I'm 5'8" and about 145 at 26% fat. I was 155 and 30%
fat a few months ago. Before a medical condition, I was always about
    135.

Well, anyways, its nice to meet everyone here.

This is MY pet peeve. Is there some reason you need to? Do you have a time goal
you're shooting for? Or are you just one of those jerks who "just wants to run
faster" for no apparent reason? Fast running will get you one thing fast,
INJURED! So if you aren't a racer, don't bother.

    Hi Erika,

I'm in a similar situation training and goal wise. You might take the
    training schedule from

    http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

and customize it to your needs. That's pretty much what I did, making
modifications based on suggestions from friends and running coaches I've met
in the area. I hope to make it to the Carlsbad 1/2 in January. I'm on
track. Tomorrow's long run will be pretty telling.

    Clear skies,

Speed will come - you just have to be patient, and consistent.
You said you've been serious only for about 2.5 months.
That's not a long time at all. Give it some more time.

Having said that, why do you feel the need for speed? Just for fun,
race goal, personal goal, etc.? Depending on that, there are books
and websites that you could use to help you set a goal and work
towards attaining it. Here's a few starters:
    www.runnersworld.com
    www.runningtimes.com

You could also try "fartlek" (web search) as an easy initiation into speed.

Check out the above-mentioned sites. They have training programs
    that you could use.

    Good luck,
    jobs

    Hi Erika,

I'd say for now make it fun. If you want to follow a half-marathon training
program that's up to you, but I enjoy my running more when I go out for
unstructured workouts sometimes. I find the best way to do this is to pick a
day when I feel particularly strong, or when I have steam to blow off. Then
I try to pick a fun place to run, like a rolling trail or something, and
then I allow myself to go really hard for several minutes, even to the point
where I have to walk to recover before continuing. I continue like this with
varying speeds, or continue at a steady pace to finish the workout after a
while. Don't be afraid to walk to rest a bit in between. Other times I will
go hard in a more classic 'tempo' way - for a sustained period of 10 to 20
minutes. A varied speed workout like this is called speedplay or fartlek,
and you can have a lot of fun doing them. Just choose days when you have
good energy and experiment. Later you can take on more structure if you
    want.

I tend to hover around the speed,
Or push up to sprints and fartleks,
at about 8.24. I can run faster but
on the whole, I keep at this steady pace
because it feels as though I'm utlizing my
best O consumption, meaning, when I sprint, I tend to breath more shallow.

The gang will tell you: strides or intervals are a good way to push yr speed,
    up slowly.

  12. A recent complaint, with my running/xtraining:

I find that I am gettring terrible leg
cramps on days that i do not run,
when i spend a lot of time at my computer,
    basically, not moving around much.
    This is getting bothersome.

I do yoga, stretch, etc, but the cramps
    have been quite irritating recently,
and there are definite days when I do not
    want to spend several hours working out;
It feels like exercise withdrawal, but feels
    worse that usual.

Any insight on cures and causes,
besides giving inot the impulse to go exercise, when I need that time for other
    tasks?

    Thanks.

See some of race schedules others have offered. Remember these are
genric schedules meant to molded to you. If your body says too much,
    adjust it downward.

As for weight be patient. As your weight comes down further and you get
closer to your half you get faster from strength of longer runs with
less weight. Also note you are entering a life style change so get down
to your fighting weight and just try to finish the race feeling good. If
you introduce speed work at the same time your losing weigh and muscles
are making major changes coping with distance, you will be back to
discuss an injury. Go slowly, you have the rest of your life to get
    faster.

If your goal is simply finishing, you can probably finish a half
    marathon even now.

Wrong! Bad advice. Don't listen to him. Train properly, building up your
mileage slowly and you'll do great! : )

Any insight on cures and causes,

Part of the situation in sitting is the edge of the chair depending on
how you are sitting can constrict circulation to the lower legs. As a
result you'll sometimes see the edema in the lower legs from sitting
    too much.

Depending on where you are working at your computer, you can elevate
    one or both legs.

While the pictures show the massage of the calf muscles on a railing,
you can use any edge: back of a chair, arm of a chair, edge of a table
or desk to massage out the calf muscles:

Also use tennis balls, baseballs, or softballs to sit on to work lose
hamstrings when sitting for long periods of time.
