BMI = body weight in kilograms/height in meters squared. Another expression
of density that is measured as mass per unit area is sectional density,
which is used in a number of fields including my own, acoustics.

It's a similar concept to column density, which is expressed in kg m-2,
being the density integrated along a line between two points.
In a very broad (and very arguable) handwavy way, it makes sense for BMI
to be tbought of as the column density on a front-to-back line, a) an
average person's width is broadly proportional to their height (so
frontal area is simply proportional to height^2, which is far easier to
measure than frontal area), and b) fat starts to pile on the front and
back of most people before it starts on the sides.

We are all made of the same "stuff" so we will all have a similar density.
It is just an approximation I believe, for instance they use a different
BMI
for children. So it only appears to work for a small range or heights.
A better idea of if you are over weigh is if people stare at you when
you waddle down the street.

informative and work better at extremes of height, and for children.

Maybe true and it seems sensible, I assume it does not work too well
in practice.

Depends where you shop I guess, more fashionable shops will not stock
large sizes but some stores recognise "big boned" people as a significant
part of their market. You often see XL and XXL sizes.
