  1. Is density mass per unit volume and body mass index mass per unit *area*?

    Am I crackers or has Joe Beer got a fundamental knowledge/understanding
    gap in the latest issue of 'Cycle'?

    BMI = body weight in kilograms/height in meters squared. Another expression
    of density that is measured as mass per unit area is sectional density,
    which is used in a number of fields including my own, acoustics.

    I bounced off that as well, then chose to ignore it. The rest of the
    article seemed reasonably sound.

    While on the subject of Cycle:

    Which makes its units kg.m-2, which could be expressed as mass per unit
    area, but not in any particular meaningful manner.

    It's a similar concept to column density, which is expressed in kg m-2,
    being the density integrated along a line between two points.

    In a very broad (and very arguable) handwavy way, it makes sense for BMI
    to be tbought of as the column density on a front-to-back line, a) an
    average person's width is broadly proportional to their height (so
    frontal area is simply proportional to height^2, which is far easier to
    measure than frontal area), and b) fat starts to pile on the front and
    back of most people before it starts on the sides.

    We are all made of the same "stuff" so we will all have a similar density.

    It is just an approximation I believe, for instance they use a different
    BMI
    for children. So it only appears to work for a small range or heights.

    A better idea of if you are over weigh is if people stare at you when
    you waddle down the street.

    True. A different mass index of the mass/height^3 would be more
    informative and work better at extremes of height, and for children.

    "Stock sizing" has been increasing at a rapid rate!

    More rapid than my wife, anyhow.

    (I never fitted stock sized clothing in the first place, since about age 15)

    in practice.

    Depends where you shop I guess, more fashionable shops will not stock
    large sizes but some stores recognise "big boned" people as a significant
    part of their market. You often see XL and XXL sizes.
