  1. My local health food stores are now as expensive as mail order, so I'm
looking for a mail order source with good prices on low carb items (e.g.,
    cereal, bars).

The catch is that I also count calories and eat little fat and little sugar
(splenda only; the other sugar alcohols upset my stomach). I can't eat fat
because of a digestive disorder; too muc fat makes me ill (what a great
disorder to have, by the way).

Is there an online store with consistently decent prices and a good
selection? One that has low-calories foods as well.
I try to find snack bars that are under 150 calories (for instance).

    Help appreciated.

  2. I should clarify ......
I eat a "modified carb" diet, not "low" carb.
    If there's a lower carb/lower calorie/lower fat alternative to a regular
product, and if it's palatable, I will use that product.

That cereal and bars are not low carb. You are being misled. Read their
labels again and see how many carbs they have (hint: a lot).
If you cannot eat fat, then, perhaps, you need to choose a more fitting diet
    than "low carb".

Have you checked with a doctor about your inability to digest fat? If
you have eaten a low fat diet for extended periods, your bile ducts may have
shrunk or bile salts hardened to form stones. Of course, do your own
research on this and don't just listen to me, because I'm not an expert and
I can't say for sure if this is indeed your problem. My Dad had a similar
problem of not being able to digest fatty foods after a year long period of
low fat dieting. It took a few months of slowly increasing fat, and taking
some herbal supplements for stimulating bile production before he was able
to eat a hamburger or steak without stomach cramps.
Here's an excerpt from an article on nutritional myths.
(A high-fat diet prevents gallbladder disease by causing the
gallbladder to discharge the bile fluids for the digestion of the fats. The
system remains healthy on the high-fat diet. Gallbladder disease has become
epidemic as more people have switched to the low-fat diet during the last 40
years. One woman on a nutritional message board stated, "Several friends and
I decided to go on a low-fat diet. We didn't lose any weight, but we all
    lost our gallbladder."😉
http://www.biblelife.org/myths.htm Quoted from the bottom of Myth #8

It is difficult to do "low fat" and "low carb" at the same time. You need
to get your energy calories from one or both. If you eliminate both, then
your energy would be coming from protein which is not ideal. Protein is
needed for growth and tissue repair but is not a favored energy source for
the body. If you are unable to eat fat, then try to get your carbs from
natural foods rather than artificially processed packaged items.
Sorry. I'm not really answering your question on where to get a good
    source of lo-carb products. I don't really know because I don't eat them. I
tend to think that a person is just switching one processed food for a
    different processed food.

  4. Low carb + low fat doesn't work.

Please clarify your illness that caused you to reject fats.

Most low carb bars are not lower in carbs than regular bars of

    comparable size, that's my point.

But are "regular bars" sugar-free? I can't do malitol, but I can do Splenda.
I can't touch Estee's diabetic products, and regular "meal replacement" bars
have too many calories (and I'm not using them for meal replacement).
I found the perfect bar at Walgreen's (20-ish carbs, 150 calories, chocolate
chip!), but someone where I work (trying to be helpful, I presume) took the
wrapper from my desk and threw it away. I can't find them again at
    Walgreen's

  6. My doc says I lack an enzyme, but he never did any further testing. My gall
    bladder is fine.
I was born with this situation. Always had a "bad stomach." My mother didn't
cook; I lived on fast food.
When I started eating healthy around age 40, my lifelong "bad stomach" went
away. When I slipped and went back to my old ways, "bad stomach" again.
    Viola!
    Limit the fats.
I don't do fat-free. I eat chicken, fish, some red meat, fruits, veggies,
and flax/protein cereal during the week and allow myself a free-for-all
buffet after church with friends (eg-fried fish with tartar sauce, fries,
ice cream, apple pie). As long as I limit my heavy fat intake to one *meal*
a week (not one *day*), I'm fine. If I try two "bad" meals a week, my
    stomach gets angry.
When folks at church are eating donuts and bagels, I eat my no-sugar
chocolate bar with my coffee. Having those bars keeps me from the real bad
stuff they put out in the hallways.

  7. When you say the doctor did not do further testing, it implies that his
saying you lack a particular enzyme was based on a test. Did he somehow get
    a sample of chyme?

I don't want to contradict a doctor, but my feeling is that something
    doesn't smell right.

    Try a new doctor.

If a laboratory analysis shows exactly what enzyme you lack, they should be
able to be very specific about what you would need to avoid.

  8. I have big trouble with the "bars" and such. I tend to eat fresh meats and
vegetables, and drink lots of water. By golly, this just works.

Maybe all those voodoo foods work for others, but from what I've been
reading in this NG, they don't work so well. I admit that I'm a purist, and
don't have preferences in one way or another over the "low carb" foods on
the market. My way of seeing it, if your lifestyle doesn't work for you
over a month or two, maybe it's time to re-evaluate the diet.

Since I have yet to see any sugar "free" bars that aren't full of sugar
alcohols, it would keep me in the bathroom. You know they don't *just* put
Splenda in those things, right? No matter what logo they stick on the front.
(No manufacturer in their right mind puts a pretty "Made with MALITOL!" logo on
    the front.)

  10. I have an Atkins Advantage Chocolate Mocha Crunch Bar here and there is no
maltitol in it. ZCarb candy has no maltitol.
