Heard on Radio 4 this morning. The (newish) owner of the Alladale (sp?) Estate (north of Inverness) is proposing to (re)introduce bison, lynx, bears and most controversially bears to the Scottish Highlands.
Were bison ever native to post-Wurm Britain?
And, I'd've thought that bear were more controversial than wolves. -- Stewart Robert Hinsley http://www.meden.demon.co.uk/

Needs the Saber Toothed Tiger to keep the numbers down.

Yep, Sabre-toothed tigers should keep the number of walkers down....

Personally I like the idea...gives it more of a wilderness feel. Just wondering where these animals will get there food though

There's no shortage of deer in the Highlands. A few wolves has got to be better than the frequent mass 'culls'.

Why not put an electric fence around the Highlands and call it Yurassic Highland Park. That way a lot of US tourist will get in (but they won't be getting out :-)

Solve the fox hunting problem in one fell thingummy. Trap the foxes rather than kill them, sent them up to the Restaurant At The End Of The Wossname - ready made meals for bison, bears, sabre toothed tigers, the lot. And if fox isn't to your taste, I hear there are a few surplus foxhounds going spare... <D&R> -- I try to be a good example to my children, but they just see me as a dire warning.

From March?, the government has outlawed the reintroduction of wolves into England and Wales. It would be classed as hunting with hounds.
Doesnt include Scotland though. don't think there is really enough open land for wolves in England (maybe Wales)
Dartmoor, Peak District, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland.
Which are surrounded on all sides by towns/villages. Go to the highlands, and I believe you only have 1 or 2 sides, the rest is water, plus the highlands slightly bigger than the above places - move room for them to move and roam

Call me an old cynic but. . . . .
If this gets the go-ahead, then presumably there will have to be large fences erected to stop the spread of the animals to neighbouring estates. As the proposal is also to charge "visitors" to see the animals, one could also sumrise that the owner will be reluctant to allow free range hillwalkers. Is it possible that this is only a smoke-screen to circumvent the forthcoming Land Access changes in Scotland by creating a large and PRIVATE estate??

So it has the added benefit of population control.
From what I've heard it is still legal to use hounds to flush out foxes, but not to kill them. Apparently more foxes are now being killed, as out-running a bloke with a scoped hunting rifle is a little harder than out-running a pack of dogs.
