So ...
a few months ago, starting with an '86 Record Sprint all-original
parts and zero knowledge apart from fixing a puncture, I now have on
the bike:
- Pete Biggs's special (minus shifters) Campagnolo Mirage Ergo levers
- 2nd hand Campagnolo Veloce brakes
- 'new' old-stock Suntour down-shifters for those friction changes
- a cold-set frame from 126mm to 130mm
- (ready to put on) a newly built wheel by me on the excellent
Cambridge course advertised on uk.rec.cycling recently (36x3 Mavic
Open Pro, Shimano Ultegra hub, DT Competition spokes - bit OTT for
this bike but I'm getting a new frame currently favouring MSteel
Cycles hopefully Spring 2005 so I'll transfer it over)
But now what ...
Obviously, I need to get a new chain once I've chosen my cassette
(SRAM/Shimano not sure but this newsgroup might not be the right place
for that discussion) but ...
In a previous set of postings, I get the feeling that the derailleur
capacity is OK for my little upgrade so that can be left alone.
I had a new bottom bracket put on before I realised the implications
of changing from 6 speed to 8/9 speed and chain line. Not much
preparation there!
Also, now I examine properly, the chainrings (52-42) are bloody awful.
Some of the teeth look they've been in a brawl and are half missing!
My 'cassette' is 14-24. It's a really pedestrian setup compared to
modern road bikes! I'm nearly always in 42x16 on flat roads but I'm so
unfit the 42x24 is not easy on even those little inclines in Richmond
Park!
I check Sheldon Brown's website
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html#bcd about cranks in order
to investigate new chain ring possibilities whilst keeping to the
existing bottom bracket and crank.
I measured the spider's C-C to be ~65mm so BCD is 110mm perhaps:
"Touring double, standard triple outer". Hmmm, anyone else have a
similar old bike with cranks to verify this? I think it's right
though.
Oh well, modern, double chainwheel sets seem to use 130mm.
Any advice? Any spares to throw my way? It seems like I need to search
for 2nd hand or old parts for new chainrings. Or should I just get an
all-new chainset? What would be the best idea?
Cheers!
