'Twas just a general statement on the vagaries of life. It stands alone
without further explanation.
I have to be careful what I let leak in here from the real world, lest those
who know me in that world put two and two together. I play games in both
worlds, y'see, 'cept the ones in real life matter, and those in here don't.
Quoted message said:'Twas just a general statement on the vagaries of life.
"Vagaries" or in your case "vulgarities"?

Not true. What happens 'in here' matters in the 'real world'. Consider the
great-interconnectedness-of -all-things. A buttery flapping it's wings in
China and such. But more to the point: We know my name is not *really* Surf
and you're not really Roger, but if either were to vanish would not Usenet
be a better or poorer place? Who knows what tiny or profound effects we've
had innumerable lurkers or frequent posters via humor, insults and the
witless tripe we bandy about? Just think of all the vicious tauntings Oz has
endured for your amusement. Does he care? Did he lose sleep? We may never
know! What about Bill? He'd be featured on the next episode COPS, captured
in front of a trailer wearing only an undershirt, if it were not for the
outlet known as rec.running.

Surf,
Life is too full. Too much to do and be. No sleep lost. Still working on my form and style and getting others to think about theirs.

all have multiple personalities. I'm a little more obvious in mine, that's
all.
___no, this is where you're wrong roger. you're too ashamed w/self to expose
this aspect of your life with anyone. i am sure no one in your family or
professional like knows this aspect of your character and you don't want them
to know about it.it's wrong and unhealthy when you live a lie. that's what you do. that's
the answer to your question, you are not authentic with people, family,
friends, co-workers, etc.we don't all live lies roger. we don't all have a repressed side of who we
are that we feel the need to live out (as long as we can do it in anonymity) on
the net.
Global,
I can only speak for myself. Roger/Jo/Frasier/Syndens is someone who may have used rec.running to do the research and character development for a manuscript. I don't even know the truth of that.
The person writing behind the various pseudonyms writes well and hooks people. Actually he doesn't hook people in, people choose to bite and then often go unconscious as they project upon the writer those things one doesn't want to examine within oneself.
I have found that rather than an "I resent that comment" I could say "I represent that comment."
We've talked about this before around here: all convesations are with myself and they happen to involve other people a good deal of the time.
For me, what is written, thought or spoken by someone says more about the one thinking, writting or speaking than it says about what or who is being thought about, written or spoken about.
Whatever I feed grows.
The following was passed on to my by a dear running friend who is now more of a biker and also has taken again playing music. He lost his wife over a year ago to pancreatic cancer. He is a grounded soul with a mind trained through the discipline of nuclear physics.
It talks to me and may speak to you, and it may speak to rec.running or any newsgroup when one goes unconscious and bites on the lure of a troll fishing for a nice thoughtful repast and a wetted appetite for repartee.
An elder Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchildren about
life.
He said to them, "A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
One wolf represents fear, anger, arrogance, envy, ego, greed, self-pity, guilt, resentment, lies, and false pride.
The other stands for forgiveness, truth, love, serenity, hope, humility, generosity, kindness, compassion and joy.
This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person,
too."
They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his
grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
'The only basis for living is believing in life, loving it, and
applying the whole force of one's intellect to know it better.'

AMEN to whoever originally said that. However I have a couple of internet
hounds I know working on tracing our warped little friend, and I suspect by
weekend we will know more than we want to know about him. He/she is a very busy
little beaver on several newsgroups.
Oops, I wanted it to be a surprise.

Hi <waves back>
Good luck tracing me. You may find a pc and someone hammering at the keys
but it ain't yours truly. I have a *very* complex modus operandi that
would certainly confuse your little brain.

Negative. Besides, it's not MY brain you have to fool, and I can guarantee you
won't fool his.

Heh! I wonder what strict rules she has imposed. "Roger, you can come back
on one condition: NO MORE SKULKING ABOUT USENET! And stay out of my
drawers!"
Now there is a funny word, drawers. Sometimes a word just doesn't look
right. Perhaps because in my mind it has fallen from common usage. Perhaps
because I've been a draftsman, but never achieved the vaunted title of
draughtsman. I mean "drawers", it might seem, to the uncultured, that Roger
should stay out of her group of illustrators as opposed to her bloomers. And
just in case any Germans are confused, I mean her bloomers (feminine), not
Herr Bloomers.

and others:
Very good to hear you've a thick skin. I hope you realized my sarcasm
regarding sleepless nights, less I cease to picture you levitating
cross-legged above a pond of lilies, beneath a Japanese pagoda, illuminated
by shimmering moonlight, yet obscured by a shroud of thin rising mist.
Despite my obvious reverence for your teachings of Zen and 'Native Oneness
with Nature' I must disagree with your allegory of the wolves. "Which one
will win? The one you feed." Doesn't work, for you must feed both, lest one
become stronger and devour the other, and in time devour ones self. I mean
the 'bad' wolf is necessary, ones needs guilt (to have a conscience) and ego
(how else might you ever win a race) and fear (lest you run straight in to
the Grand Canyon) and anger (or the SUV's will have won). Being consumed by
forgiveness, truth, love, serenity, hope, humility, generosity, kindness,
compassion and joy might seem a nice way to go, but it would be nonetheless
messy as the alternative. The former, should it win completely, might be
reminiscent of a scene from Dracula (which film escapes me), where he is
left twisting and burning in the sunlight aboard a ship at sea. The latter
might dissolve like the scene from X-Men where the politician turns to
water. Sorry bad analogies, especially the politician bit which seems
incompatible with an excess of generosity and kindness and the like, but my
point is there has to be a balance.
Now, must run and hug many trees along the way, lest I chop them down.
Surfidly yours,
Surf

I think you're right, Surfie-boy. 'Cept, to continue this shockingly poor
analogy even further, (rather than pummel it to death the second it had
fallen limp and malformed from Oz's twisted mouth) you can feed them both
but only show affection to *one* of them. Thus one maintains perfect
balance within your soul yet retains the humanity necessary for the leading
of a 'good life' so dear to Oz's heart.
Y'can think too much about this sort of stuff. To me, *doing* is all.
Thinking is what you do afterwards - usually wishing you'd done things
differently. What I'm into in my personal life at the mo' is mighty
stupid - probably even carries a significant degree of risk - and I know if
I stopped to think I'd change direction immediately. So I don't think, I
just do. If things go fine, it was worth the risk. If they don't, it was
still worth the risk but, Lord, the price will be hefty. Still, I couldn't
live with myself in years to come if I hadn't tried.
Once or twice in life you just have to put yourself out there, heart and
soul.
Roger.
