  1. I'm on day 6 of induction and have lost a measly 4 lbs. This time, I'm being
extremely strict - minimal cheese, no caffiene, nothing with hidden carbs. The
ketostix indicate that I'm in moderate ketosis (though I thought I'd be in
extreme ketosis by now, given what I've been eating).

This is the third time I'm on Atkins. The first time, I lost 15 lbs after 2
weeks on induction and as I recall, at least 10 lbs in the first 5 days. That
    was 3 years ago.
The second time, abot a year ago, was less effective - lost only 9 lbs on
    induction.

I'm wondering if my body has built up a metabolic resistance to low carb diets,
rendering them ineffective. If so, I'll have to go back to a reduced calorie
diet. I was steadily losing 2 lbs/week on that.

    Sigh!

LC is bascially a reduced calorie diet for most people. Calorie reduction
results from less eating due to BG normalization. So your problem may
simply be that you're eating too many calories to lose weight (the goal of
induction is not really weight loss). Comparing your loss to previous
attempts in the past is almost meaningless. You're older, perhaps less
active, and perhaps carrying less muscle mass and lean body tissue. The
fact that you've dropped 4 lbs in 6 days indicates that the process is
working. You simply have to wait it out and have reasonable expectations.
You should realize that most of that 4 lbs is water weight anyway, and that
is the case for the 15 and 10 lbs on the previous attempts.

So, complete induction and take what you get. You can lose 2 lbs per week
on any diet if you simple create enough of a calorie deficit. Unless you
are extremely heavy (and we have no idea since you gave no real info in your
post), though, losing a 2 lbs/week is really too fast and will likely result
in your regaining in the weight. Don't expect to lose weight so fast.
Shoot for 1 lb per week unless you weight over 300 lbs or so. And if you're
really light, it will be even slower than that.

  3. Like Ignoramus said, your weightloss is fine. In fact, any diet that loses
a pound a week is making good progress.

I large loss that sometimes occurs the first week of is probably mostly
water. If you never rebuilt your glycogen stores, it could explain your
changed results. Did you go back to the large carb eating you had before
your first LC diet, or did you exercise some moderation in carbs after being
a low carber? If it was the latter, it may explain the difference you are
    seeing.

I think one can build up glycogen stores just fine in a year of not LCing.

I have heard it said that indeed one can have prior "low carb" dieting
episodes will decrease the efficiency of the subsequent trials, but
don't think that I have seen this as published research.

There has been discussion that very low calorie dieting will knock the
metabolism (BMR) off kilter to the low side, making all further calorie
    restriction attempts less effective.

You seem a possible candidate for both of the above common claims.

You know, this would be a good time to have had diet diaries from the
past to help you figure out what actually did happen.

    Never too late to start.

It is such a *good* idea, I might actually start one myself. Maybe that
would help me figure out my lack of progress.

But, maybe when the sun comes up tomorrow bright and shiny, I will get
out the notebook and rule those nice lines, and *THEN* I'll start my
diet diary. And tonight, I can continue to just second guess myself for
what I have been actually eating and doing while I wait for the weight
    to go down.

Why do you think Atkins isn't workking? Why are you complaining about
losing 4 lbs. in 6 days? Seems to me that if you're losing weight on a
diet, it's working. Maybe you're not losing fast enough to satisfy
you, but I'd be happy with a 4 lb. a week weight loss rate.
