    Hi all,

Everything was going exceptionally well until yesterday evening. I was
noticing on Monday that I had some lower back pain, then yesterday
evening it got pretty bad so I went to bed feeling quite sick. This
morning the pain is still in my right side, right up under the ribs
and radiating into my back area. My back is quite tender to touch (on
    the left hand side.)

I am drinking plenty of water and my ketone sticks read in the pink
area, so I am thinking that perhaps I need to check with my doc to see
what could be the problem. I am hoping that it is nothing much because
I do not want to give up this WOE.

I have noticed that I have a lot more energy. Perhaps even too much if
that makes any sense because it makes sleeping at night a little
difficult but I have read that this soon will pass.

I believe that what I eat affects my emotions as well and since I
suffer with depression and anxiety I have been keeping a look out to
see how the food is affecting me in this way. Most of the nine days
have been pretty good. 🙂 Yesterday and today are not so good, and I
am quite down but I bet it's because I am in pain and probably
    worrying needlessly about my body.

I haven't weighed myself this morning as yet, (okay I will do that
now). I am currently 63.5kg (about 140lbs) so that means I have lost
1.5kg in 9 days. I am happy with that.

This morning I am feeling rather off-colour, with the pain and the
general shakiness and a bit of nausea. However, I am going to push
through and keep positive. I will have a chat with the doc and see
    what she has to say.

    All the best,

  4. The pain area, at the side and radiating backwards is typical pain path for
Kidney stones, BUT you actually writhe with the pain and can't get
comfortable in any position. It also typically disappears in 3-5 hours from
    onset.

Don't get me wrong, Atkin's/Low Carb does NOT cause Kidney stones.

It's unfortunate that this is happening to you. I have to agree with other
posters, it's not because of your low-carb diet. It just happened to
    coincide.

Stay strong, and stay with us through your ordeals. You WILL win, and
you'll be back among us with stories of triumph!

  6. The back pain certainly suggests to me that it might be a kidney
stone. My Taller Half was plagued with them for years, from the time
he first moved here to Adelaide until after he joined me on LC.
According to his urologist, kidney stones take about 2 years to
develop, so the timing is likely to be co-incidental.

Do see your doctor about it. If it is a stone (or stones) you can be
prescribed pain relief until the stone works its way along and out.
If the stone is big, it might require treatment such as lithotripsy
(sonic shattering) to reduce the thing to small shards to pass more
readily. An ultrasound will probably be arranged to confirm stones.

After following LC for the past 2 years, my husband did still develop
*a* stone, about 2mm across. His medico was amazed that he felt it at
all, but Himself says that he feels so much better while LCing that
even such a minor change was noticeable. When on his previous Low Fat
plan, he generally developed 2 - 3 stones each around 30mm in the same
time frame. He's had a lot of experience with lithotripsy! The most
recent stone he was able to shrink by drinking about a litre a day of
Ural (urinary alkaliniser sold OTC at pharmacies, and usually used to
treat cystitis). It passed 'without comment' after a few days of
    this.

It is a kidney infection. I am on day 3 of antibiotic therapy. I still
don't feel really well though. Oh well, we shall see what next week
    brings.

  10. HI
I was happy to read your comments about the stones and glad to know
about the Ural.....is that commonly used?

I am more happy to read that the back pain thing is an infection that
meds will deal with. Stones cannot be much fun.

Something else learned from ng--I will check on the Ural availability
    here in my town.

Ural is a urinary alkaliniser, most commonly used to treat cystitis.
It's available over the counter at pretty much any pharmacy here in
Australia. It contains sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid, citric acid
    anhydrous and sodium cytrate anhydrous.

It can be of use in certain kinds of stones - his doctor already knew
(from MUCH previous experiance) that his kind of stones are almost
always the kind that can be helped. It won't help with large stones,
but with small ones that are 'stuck' as this one was it can help
shrink it enough to pass easily.
