My dad cleaned his bike today, and decided that the pedals felt rather
awful. No problem, I thought: Strip them down, clean and grease them,
and put back together.
Nope! They have never been serviced in the 8 years he has owned the
bike. They simply would not come off. I snapped an allen key in the
process . Fortunately it was safely concealed inside a seatpost which
was being used as an extension lever, so my fingers were uninjured.
Then the plan of action was to remove the crank arms so that dad could
mount them in a vice at work. Again, Nope! The crank extractor (the
part of lesser diameter) managed to break free and is now lodged
inside the BB axle.
Bummer. What now? Take it as an excuse to buy a new bike?
