  1. I have been on the Atkins diet for about six months. I did the induction
phase for 8 weeks, and averaged a weight loss of 11/2 pounds per week. What
concerns me is that I always have shown negative on my Keto-stix. During
that 8 week period, I consumed betrween between 18 to 25 grams of carbs per
day. Now, I have stalled and am back on induction, but not in ketosis.
    Any thoughts?

You may be staying so well hydrated that your urine is too dilute to
register on the sticks. In any case, if you are losing weight you can
of course ignore the sticks. There are devices available for home
testing of blood ketones if you want to try that (CardioChek, which
    also does lipids, sugar, etc.).

  4. Try eating less, and doing some exercise.

  5. Are you saying eating less and exercising will cause me to go into ketosis?
My question concerned why a daily dose of only 20 carbs don't put me into
    ketosis?

  6. I hadn't considered the hydration possibility. I take a pretty good dose of
diuretics every day, and drink water all day long. Just guessing, I would
say I drink 1-11/2 gallons of water a day.

I checked out the CardioChek. They seemed pricey. $270 for unit, plus $70
for test strips. I wonder if this could be something insurance would pay
    for?

  7. Yes.

My first question would be, how do you know you're not in ketosis? It's not
    an earth-shattering experience for everyone.

JC is right, especially about the exercise. Eating less will always work,
but you have to constantly create the muscle tissue. If your caloric intake
falls to low you run the danger of burning muscle as well as fat. That is
why exercising, to maintain the muscle level, is important. Higher muscle
density also means that more calories are required to maintain your body.

If you follow most low-carb plans, you will find yourself eating more
healthful foods and eathing less of them, and if you exercise, your body
will be creating muscle (which burns fat) and burning fat from your diet
besides. Not long ago I had a conversation with a fitness trainer who tried
low-fat diets, and then turned to Atkins. She told me that on the low-fat,
she was losing weight okay, but it all came from her [censored] and left it in
her butt.. Atkins, she said, took it from the regions she wanted to lose it
    from.

She isn't the first person to have that experience.

  9. I am going by the visual result on the KetoStix. I exercise at a gym 3
times/week, usually for an hour, and do stretch exercises 30 minutes daily,
primarily for low back pain. I usually eat between 1800-2000 calories/day,
am 6'2" tall and have a large frame. I don't eat bread, rice, pasta,
potatoes, sugar and rarely eat the so-called bad veggies like beans,
tomatoes, etc, and pretty much lay off the high fat foods such as butter and
cream. I drink alcohol a couple times a week, usually red wine or vodka. I
get a buzz, but haven't been drunk for a few years. I do have 6-8 grams of
carbs from Metamucil each day. Constipation has been a problem on low carb
dieting. I think I am doing everything I hear others are doing, but the
ketones don't show up on the KetoStix.

I can't remember from your first post if you said you are losing weight or
not. (that's why you should leave in the relevant parts of the discussion
when you reply) If you're losing weight, then ketosis shmetosis, it
doesn't matter. Could be just that you drink enough water to dilute the
ketones. Lots of people lose weight on low-carb without ever using a single
    one of those sticks.

If you're _not_ losing, and I mean for several weeks straight, not just a
couple of days, then you probably need to cut back the eating or ramp up
the exercise. Do you have a trainer at the gym? Or are you a very
experienced exerciser yourself? I ask because I don't want you to go and
up the intensity too much and hurt your back even more. :o) I'd also
recommend cutting back, or cutting out altogether, the alcohol. Even if it
is low-carb or carb-free alcohol, your body will still burn it first
instead of the body fat. As for the Metamucil, I believe there is now a
carb-free fiber supplement out, I forget who makes it though. I don't take
it myself, spinach and broccoli usually keep me regular, no problem. :o)

One day at a time. I also have a problem getting up to eat after I've gone to
bed. Sometimes I don't even remember it until I wake up and discover evidence
such as a paper towel or a tiny plate. I usually stick to low-carb (bacon or a
ham & swiss rollup is common), but it's a real problem for me. I think part of
it is that I take something to help me sleep, which lowers my resistance to such
impulses. I don't usually WAKE UP to eat, but during that approximately 20
minute-period BEFORE I fall asleep I'm much more likely to give in.

  15. I figure I don't need the extra calories. I don't really care for the heavy
cream. Desert is usually a Blue Bonnet (5 gm) yogurt, with some almond
slivers added, or Torani flavored Ricotta cheese. It is also one of those
deals, where I rationalize adding the empty alcohol calories from vodka as a
    substitute for the butter calories.

I do the same thing, Warren. Don't waste a single minute feeling guilt
and shame over this. I have started keeping a jar of cashews by my bed
to lessen the sleep disruption. I keep my weight down by jogging and
limiting carbs as much as possible. Just try to keep a low carb snack
    by your bed.

The other side effect of midnight snacking is sleep disturbance, which
causes moodiness and depression. I've looked into this a little bit
and heard that around 15% of the population are midnight snackers.
That's total hearsay, but it helped me to not feel like the lone
    ranger.

Incidentally, last night was the first time in a long time that I've
slept through the whole night without waking up and eating at 3:00
a.m. Here's what I did and I plan to do it again soon because I feel
freaking fantastic today. I can't really recommend this on a regular
    basis, but here it is:

Didn't eat anything all day. Jogged 3.5 miles after work (if you're
not a jogger maybe try walking fast?). Went to the grocery store and
ran an errand. Finally ate dinner --first meal of the day-- at around
9:00 p.m. Had hamburger lettuce wraps with bacon, cheese, and ketchup.
I know ketchup is a no no, but [censored] it, man, I feel freaking fantastic
today. Plus it's gotta be more nutritious than raw cookie dough, my
    other guilty pleasure.

    HTH. Good luck.

  17. I wondered if my own middle-of-the-night eating had anything to do with
hypoglycemia or a drop in blood sugar overnight?
I've been taking GTF one dose before bed and another at lunch to see if it
    helps any.
