  1. The original post was Frustrated.

I helped my sister get on the Low Carb road 6 weeks ago, actually she moved
in here on 6/28. She went from 358 at start, to last week 337. The problem
is that this week she weighed 343 and followed the plan diligently, except
she had one Diet Rite a week, and after symptoms of a UTI cranberry juice on
Tuesday (8oz 32 grs carbs) and Wednesday (8oz of the lite 10gr carbs).

How do I keep her motivated? There still is a substantial weight loss on
    the books?

  2. Not one Diet Rite a week, one Diet rite a day:

I lost about 10 lbs since I started at 212 lbs. this week my loss was 8/10
    of a lb.

Neither of us ever reached ketosis. We have been staying at 45 net carbs
per day. We have kept a journal.

My guess is that she is probably lying to you and eating even more
carbs. As for motivating her, you can only do so much. When you are
337 lbs, facts should be pretty obvious, if she is not motivated, she is
deeply mentally disturbed and/or in denial.

Is it possible it's close to her TOM? I gain quite a bit of water
weight just before my TOM, and it all pours off during TOM - no matter
what I do. It's such a lovely thing. NOT.

I generally drink about 2 liters of Diet Rite a day. I've never noticed
any effect on weight loss, but I'm actually in the middle of a little
experiment right now - drinking plain water during the day and only
having one glass of Diet Rite in the evening. I don't believe there is
any direct effect of sucralose on weight loss, but I'm curious to see if
the constant drinking of a sweet liquid tends to increase appetite, and
if not drinking as much sweet soda will suppress that, causing me to
    want to eat less.

Daily graphing of my weight (measured at the same time each morning when
I first get up) is showing some interesting cyclic patterns.
Interestingly, my weight bumped up two pounds today, from 198 to 200. I
was at 197 three days ago. Probably due to getting a little dehydrated
yesterday doing a lot of yard work, for fun I weight myself after coming
in just before a shower and was down to 195. So I am guessing my body is
retaliating by retaining more water at the moment.

My mini goal is 190 in 4 weeks. Not sure if I can make it, but I think i
    can get close.

Same thinking here. You can't make her want it if she doesn't want it for herself.

You might want to get her do some exercise? Seeing fit people enjoying their
life and the feel good factor after the exercise might give her some motivation?
Remove all the carby drinks and food from the house would also be good - now
your sister would have to at least walk / drive to a shop to get carby stuff if
    she wants it.

  8. I think there may be 2 things going on here. One as another said, It may be
close to TOM. I can gain 3 pounds overnight just one week before and during
I can gain another 3 pounds. Then It falls off when its over.
Does your sis still have the UTI? If she does tell her to stop drinking the
cranberry juice and but cranberry pills. I can not imagine they have more
sugar in them than the juice does. Just make sure to drink her 64 ounces at
least of water per day to flush her system.
good luck. My thoughts are with you and your sister.

  9. This post helped us put together a scenario. I actually registered 199 two
weeks ago, in the morning. I haven't seen that either, it is like a goal.
There is a story the Rabbis tell about marriage and the honeymoon. How the
honeymoon is like an example of what can be in a marriage, and then the
couple work toward it. This reminded me of that story.

So, the fluctuation is not just a glitch, it is a part of the whole story.
My sister is back on the wagon after a coaching fight from me.

    Thank you, Chris.

  11. She is exercising more, little by little. I realized when I carried two
bags of softener salt up the stairs, which is 80 more pounds, how difficult
it would be to carry up almost three bags of them to compensate for the

Contrary to popular belief, most people also need to watch calories on a low
carb diet. She may be eating 45g of carbs per day, but if her caloric intake
is too high, then she will still have trouble losing weight. If she is
motivated to lose the weight, have her log her food intake on a journal at
www.fitday.com and see where she ends up. You can post the results here so
that some of the more knowledgeable "food people" can have a look at it and
see where she may be going wrong. My guess is that there are too many
calories, or more carbs than you're aware of being consumed.

    A few other tips:
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

Exercise. It can be walking, mowing the grass, wading in a swimming pool,
etc. The object here is to MOVE. You don't need to take on a heavy exercise
regimen right away. Eventually you and her may be able to start a light
weightlifting program. The key here is to get started. Most sedentary people
will see fast results from incorporating exercise, and it is also very
    addictive.

Get rid of all the carby food, and low carb fake foods. These are just
asking for trouble. Keep lots of fresh veggies, eggs, meats, nuts, etc.
around the house. Have these things handy, but do not gorge yourself on
them. 4000 calories a day (just an example) will cause weight gain in just
about anybody. Especially someone that does not do much or any exercise.

Be patient. Some people get off to a slow start with weight loss, and then
all of a sudden it starts dropping rather quickly. Also, keep a record of
body measurements. Sometimes the scale doesn't move, but the inches are
coming off. the next thing to remember is that none of us that were/are
overweight, gained it in a week. We sure aren't going to lose it in a week.

This summer has been quite active for me, and to be honest, I cheated on my
carbs on occasion, but that fact that I was very active helped me lose 56
pounds in a mere 5 months. It can be done, but the whole plan needs to fit
    together for it to happen.

    HTH
    Chris

  14. Weight loss is not linear, I weigh every day and graph it, here's an example
    of what it looks like:
    http://pic2.picturetrail.com/VOL39/1526244/2915437/53703197.jpg

How do you know you have never gotten into ketosis? At 45 c/day you should
    definitely be in ketosis.

Patience is what it takes, I have gone from 292 to 237 in a little over a
year, not real fast, but that's 55 lbs. I no longer have to lug around.

and after symptoms of a UTI

    Mary,

When I'm in ketosis and throwing a large quantity of them I get symptoms
of UTI's myself. Drinking a much larger quantity of water to dilute my
urine helps to solve this problem. Has your sister seen a doctor to
    confirm a UTI?

Also, keep in mind they sell unsweetend cranberry. It tastes horrid but
just tell yourself you're taking a shot of medicine.

For future reference, blueberries have the same effect on the urinary
    tract that cranberries.

It's pretty shockign to think you've been following TWOE so carefully
and aren't in ketosis at all. Do you use strips to test your urine? Is
it possible you got a bad batch?

    Good luck,
    Laura B.

But, not always true for everyone. I go in ketosis only when my Carbs
are below 25, and has NEVER been in the Burgandy/Purple color, just
    Pink.

If you have "hard" water, you can use a water softener, which effectively
replaces the "hard" elements in the water with "soft" elements. This
process is performed by resin, which is recharged by salt.

  19. The color has nothing to do with whether you are in or out, even the palest
color means you are in, the deeper colors mean more concentration which may
only mean you are not drinking enough water.

There still is a substantial weight loss on
    the books?

Water weight fluctuations can cause undue dismay. I doubt very much
that she ate 21,000 extra calories that week to put 6 pounds of fat
    back on.

Most women "gain" several pounds of water retention before
    menstruating.

Enough carb to take her out of ketosis would refill glycogen and
add roughly 5 pounds of temporary water weight for a few days (when
glycogen is stored in the muscles and liver, every gram of glycogen
is stored with several grams of water). This would drop back off
when she goes back in ketosis.

A day of salty foods can do the same with temporary water retention.
I once "gained" 6 pounds of water after overdoing bacon at a brunch
    buffet.

A lot of people have noted that in hot weather they tend to retain
fluid, also, and it is August.
