  1. I like the graph idea. With my weight loss I like to see what sends me up a
little or down a little. I bought a Tanita Digital scale. I weighed a bag
of salt on it and it was right on the money at 40 lbs.

My sister on the other hand has been at this all her life and I think she is
afraid of the scale. She says that I am obsessing.

I bought the strips, my sister tried them the first few weeks and they
frustrated her. I never tried them but last week I felt as if I was
boiling. The weather was hot, but I felt as if I were melting and I read an
article that this could be a sign.

  2. See, we have not cut them below 40...that was our lowest day and that was
right before the UTI and things, like my sister bloated and so we became
concerned. She had seen a doctor before we started the program, but we
aren't the rush to the doctor every time you sneeze kind of people. So we
    went back to 45.

But, not always true for everyone. I go in ketosis only when my Carbs
are below 25, and has NEVER been in the Burgandy/Purple color, just
    Pink.

  3. I have a water well and the water is very hard and so we use softener salt.
When I first got the Tanita scale we noticed that it varied from location to
location, from the bathroom to the kitchen, and so we decided on a location
and left it there. After a while we wondered if it was accurate at all and
so I went down to the basement and dragged up softener salt, scientific
experiments should not have variables like location. The scale was right on
    the money.

When I dragged up the bag I realized how much 40 extra pounds wears on the
back. I decided to try two bags to get an idea how difficult even climbing
the stairs was for my sister...and she is 140 lbs more than me.

Contrary to popular belief, most people also need to watch calories on a

    low

    Quoted message said:

carb diet. She may be eating 45g of carbs per day, but if her caloric

    intake

    Quoted message said:

is too high, then she will still have trouble losing weight. If she is
motivated to lose the weight, have her log her food intake on a journal at
www.fitday.com and see where she ends up. You can post the results here so
that some of the more knowledgeable "food people" can have a look at it

    and

    Quoted message said:

see where she may be going wrong. My guess is that there are too many
calories, or more carbs than you're aware of being consumed.

    A few other tips:
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

Exercise. It can be walking, mowing the grass, wading in a swimming pool,
etc. The object here is to MOVE. You don't need to take on a heavy

    exercise

    Quoted message said:

regimen right away. Eventually you and her may be able to start a light
weightlifting program. The key here is to get started. Most sedentary

    people

    Quoted message said:

will see fast results from incorporating exercise, and it is also very
    addictive.

Get rid of all the carby food, and low carb fake foods. These are just
asking for trouble. Keep lots of fresh veggies, eggs, meats, nuts, etc.
around the house. Have these things handy, but do not gorge yourself on
them. 4000 calories a day (just an example) will cause weight gain in just
about anybody. Especially someone that does not do much or any exercise.

Be patient. Some people get off to a slow start with weight loss, and then
all of a sudden it starts dropping rather quickly. Also, keep a record of
body measurements. Sometimes the scale doesn't move, but the inches are
coming off. the next thing to remember is that none of us that were/are
overweight, gained it in a week. We sure aren't going to lose it in a

    week.

    Mary,

When I'm in ketosis and throwing a large quantity of them I get symptoms
of UTI's myself. Drinking a much larger quantity of water to dilute my
urine helps to solve this problem. Has your sister seen a doctor to
    confirm a UTI?

Also, keep in mind they sell unsweetend cranberry. It tastes horrid but
just tell yourself you're taking a shot of medicine.

For future reference, blueberries have the same effect on the urinary
    tract that cranberries.

It's pretty shockign to think you've been following TWOE so carefully
and aren't in ketosis at all. Do you use strips to test your urine? Is
it possible you got a bad batch?

    Good luck,
    Laura B.

  6. She has been eating a lot of blueberries, they are in season and she loves
    them.
Perhaps the UTI was a symptom of ketosis and I simply forgot to suggest she
    try a strip.

  7. We did try the new low carb Cheetos this week, but measured...they are 7 gr
per 1 oz, and I did weigh them on my scale before serving them. She is
getting a little crabby these days too, which is unusual.

Water weight fluctuations can cause undue dismay. I doubt very much
that she ate 21,000 extra calories that week to put 6 pounds of fat
    back on.

Most women "gain" several pounds of water retention before
    menstruating.

Enough carb to take her out of ketosis would refill glycogen and
add roughly 5 pounds of temporary water weight for a few days (when
glycogen is stored in the muscles and liver, every gram of glycogen
is stored with several grams of water). This would drop back off
when she goes back in ketosis.

A day of salty foods can do the same with temporary water retention.
I once "gained" 6 pounds of water after overdoing bacon at a brunch
    buffet.

A lot of people have noted that in hot weather they tend to retain
fluid, also, and it is August.

  9. I finally am getting a handle on my body. Just the week before, maybe two
weeks before I blew it with a watermelon. It was the week that I was so
sweaty I thought I would melt and so I ate a half of a seedless watermelon.
The morning of the watermelon feast was my lowest weight, 199.6, the
following day I weighed in at 109.3 which was more than my original after we
got the scale, 107. After two or three days I did go down to 206 and then
my lowest morning weight to date after the 199.6 was 202.8.

I had very mild symptoms of the UTI myself but I didn't guzzle cranberry
juice cocktail like my sister did. I had 8 oz of the lite which I went out
and bought that night. So she actually carbo loaded on the cranberry juice.
She also has adverse reaction to legumes such as soy and I had made soy
crepes and stir fry on the same day. But now, your post took me back to my
    own escapades with the watermelon.

Thank you, It is so nice to get to know my own body after, for me 54 years.

I made no comment about whether or not it was working. I just asked which, if
