  1. Just 2 lifts? Interesting. How many sets and how much rest do you
recommend, to make this enough work?

Also, could you point me to some examples of the kinds of deadlifts
and military presses you mean? I did a search and found there were
many kinds of both 🙂 Thanks!

Lift for strength, as in keep your reps low and do several sets. Be
conservative in adding weight to your lifts. Be consistent.

I have been low carbing for about a year now and have lost about 40
lbs. I am a 5'11" male and currently weigh 235 on a fairly large
frame. My goal is to lose another 50 lbs of fat through diet and
exercise, I think 185 is about right for me.

Here is my question. I am doing 30 mins of cardio (eliptical runner)
5 days a week. I am also doing some weight training, but I want to
make sure I am doing it right. My understanding is that gaining
muscle mass while losing fat and having a calorie deficit is
    difficult.

What would be the best type of weight lifting regimen for me to add to
my cardio for the simple goal of losing weight and bodyfat? Adding
muscle size can wait until I am at my goal weight and add some
calories back in. What do you recommend?

BTW I work out alone, so I need to avoid anything that needs a spotter
    =)

  2. I like to start a workout with short warmup of 50 pushups or so.

If you look at a two week cycle at three workouts per week, then there are
six total workouts per cycle. I like to start with 5 sets per exercise and
increase the sets by one each workout until the final workout of the cycle
is 10 sets. I then increase the weight a little and start at 5 sets again.

I prefer the standard stance for the deadlift, with my feet fairly close
together. I do a standing military press, hands just a little more than
shoulder-width apart, making sure that I don't use my legs at all to drive
    the weight up.

As far as rest goes, I usually take a minute or two between sets. Sometimes
more if I'm feeling tired. I usually go with three reps per set. With
deadlifts, sometimes I drop down to singles. It depends.

It's not good to think in terms of whether or not it's enough work. Think in
terms of progress. You shouldn't finish your workout feeling like you don't
have anything left in the tank. It's better to feel like you've worked, but
that you could have done more. The most important thing though, is to see if
you are lifting progressively heavier weights.

At some point, if this all works out for you, the next thing to learn about
    is wave loading.

Doesn't sound like much of a workout to me, at all. For instance, on
"leg day" (just an example of a sample workout) I do squats with a bar
, plié squats and step-ups power set, leg press, leg extensions,
hamsting curls (drop sets) and finish with dead lifts. Three sets of
    each, 12-15 reps.

On chest/tricep day I'll do flies (either on my back, incline bench or
cable flies), bench press, pec deck, standard chest press (sitting
machine), cable pull-downs and skull crushers.

On back/bicep day I'll do assisted push-ups/overhead cable pull downs
power set, pull-downs, standing rows, and then a variety of bicep
stuff like hammer curls, cable curls, etc.

The deadlifts that I do are the last things I do on my "leg day". I
put a couple of 25 pound weight plates on the floor and put my toes up
on the edge, so my heel is pointing down (gives a nice stretch to the
back of the legs after a hard workout). I hold a bar (45 lbs.,
currently) in front of me (straight arms, hanging down) and hinge
forward at the waist, keeping my back straight, bending over as far as
I can comfortably. Then, back to a standing position. 3 sets of 12-15
    reps.

The military presses I do are with dumb bells, although many folks use
a bar. I sit on that little bench they have in the gym with the
straight back - I like the back support it provides. So, arms at 90°
to your body, and push the weights overhead to touch then back down,
never letting your elbows sag below 90°. Again, I try to squeeze out 3
    sets of 12-15 reps.

    I take two cardio-aerobic one-hour classes a week, and I do 20 minutes
on the elliptical trainer on my back day and my chest day (no cardio
on leg day - it would be too much). I always warm up with 5 minutes on
the elliptical before I hit the weights.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

    Yes, jpegs would be great.

Actually, I've gotten incredible results from my exercise regimen. I'm
happy to pose for my hubby, any time he wants. I see no reason to show
myself to complete strangers. In fact, the thought of it kind of
freaks me out. I really don't understand the mentality of a lot of
people here who show pictures of themselves. Looking in the mirror,
stepping on the scale, seeing how my clothes fit (or actually don't
fit any more - too big), that's all I need. I sure don't need
confirmation from a bunch of strangers that what I'm doing is working.

    and yet

many kinds of both 🙂 Thanks!

Starting out with a strength oriented weight training program like
this one os nuts for a beginner like yourself.

Tons of wasted time here; complete overkill.

The deadlifts that I do are the last things I do on my "leg day". I
put a couple of 25 pound weight plates on the floor and put my toes up

Why in the world would you want to add a balance challenge to a
    deadlift?

I always warm up with 5 minutes on

Tell me, how much "warmer" did you get? What, exactly, is the purpose
    of "warming up"?

Why do you need all of these movements? Doing deadlifts last tells a lot

Her personal trainer told her so, Zoul. It's gospel now. As to the DLs
that late, half on-off a plate, "nuff said.

heh. If you're doing them last, then likely you're not getting much benefit
    from them, imo.

Lee has already told us that their is near complete fatigue at the end
of the workout and NOW it is time to do DLs?

But then the PT took no medical history and is certified, I'll bet
