  1. I'm hoping to have some fun on the Tameside Trail (the wot? thinks most
of you) next week. I have enjoyed exploring it all over the last three
months or so and am going for it in a day...

For those interested please take a look at my plans:

I was hoping to enter the KIMM but missed the entry date so had to make
    my own challenge up.

You will be passing my house!
Rachel could park on my drive and throw water over you from the garden.

I'll keep a lookout, but I don't know if I'll be fit enough to join you,
as I am in the middle of a 'Flu episode today.

Worthy cause - I am familiar with that hospital, having made many visits
there with Pat, my wife, before we lost her. :-(

Thanks Gordon but looking at the weather forecast she might not need you
to fill that bucket for me!

You will have to let me know where you are ds @ matley . c . u

They are very good there but sadly there is often little they can do :-(

By doing my little bit I hope I can help them improve their arsenal...

I'm afraid not, I have to be careful at my age. I distinctly remember
that my last bout of 'Flu came some 8 years ago, after I'd done some
circuits of Werneth, jogging on the flat and downhill, walking uphill,
and when I told my doctor he gave me a bollocking and said "Stick to
    brisk walks".

Catching flu has feck all to do with excersise or temperature. It's a
virus innit! You get infected by breathing it in when somebody with it
breathes out in your vicinity. You can get a jab to imunise yourself,
though that's a bit accademivc now ,still you can't catch it twice.
It's free if you are at risk but anybody can pay to get one, or at
least they could until about 50% of the 'lu vacine stock was withdrawn
    because of fears of contamination.

    <Grin>
If you have specialist knowledge of geriatric patients please skip to
    final paragraph. ;-)

I know all that, which is why I keep fit (for my age) by walking
regularly to build resistance to illness. However, I do know that
when I over-exert myself, eg - if I do a walk which requires me to
extend myself too far, I am 'wrecked' for at least two days afterwards.
An example was a recent 6 miler which became 10 due to a pub visit/nav
error, and on a very hot day.
Similarly, if I do two energetic walks on consecutive days I have the
    same unpleasant experience.

In this fragile state I know that I am more vulnerable to viruses, 'Flu
or whatever. Regarding the vaccination, I was persuaded by my doctor
to have one, and 4 days later I had all the symptoms of 'Flu, banging
headache, limbs aching, shivering/sweating, phlegmatic cough, wanting to
go to bed alone in the afternoon........
I also had a jab last year, in November, with no reaction whatsoever,
this year's produced a hard lump and made my arm painful to raise to the
horizontal or higher. Oddly - my lady friend had the same experience
this year, so maybe we got the Chiron batch?

It is not true that 50% of has been withdrawn, that was 50% of the
American supply, from Chiron in Liverpool, there was no problem for me
or my peers, except for the queues in some surgeries. I was in and out
in a couple of minutes. The NHS wisely uses six sources....

[1] Or perhaps when it is injected into your body? ;-)

Dragged myself out of my sick bed this morning after a horrible night,
wrapped up and wandered outside a few times, then just as I sat down to
breakfast I saw our hero jogging swiftly away from me, but I was too
late to catch his attention. :-(

But I captured him on my security camera, slightly behind schedule.

Sorry about the poor timing Gordon, lots of mire had slowed me down a
    little.

I caught up a bit after that and arrived at Daisy Nook just about on
time. Thereafter I steadily slowed down with the strong wind giving me a
    bashing on the hilly bits.

When I got to Mossley I thought I was in with a chance of finishing as I
only had ten miles left and I didn't feel terrible. Walking into the
wind over Harridge Pike was fun but not as much as the cattle churned
bogs and farmyard mire on the way down to Hollingworth.

Slowly got up onto the Hague Road and knew it wasn't far, barring mad
dogs or a freak injury I looked certain to make it.

Got back to Lymefield at 16:43 - eight hours and eight minutes after
    leaving.

Watched The Challenge on TV last night and realise my day had not been
    too hard.

At least it stayed dry, despite the forecasts, but I watched the bushes
    blowing outside!

I can imagine. Last time we went up Hartshead Pike we had a hell of a
job ploughing through a bog on the way up, and crossed a barbed wire
fence in the end to escape it. I think we took the same route as you
did, so that must have been unpleasant.

That's a cracking pace over the terrain in question, and 1260m ascent.

    :-)

I would have loved to give you more support around the route, but as I
drove out of Sainsbury's yesterday I nearly ran into the back of a bus
through poor concentration, so I wasn't really fit to drive!

I would like to explore more of the Trail than we have done, but many of
the tracks around the area are just unpleasantly muddy, and in one or
two places were badly overgrown. I got earache for dragging her round
    the Godley Reservoir circuit!

    Cheers

You may need to eat more chocolate, to build up your strength. I can
recommend the Green & Black's organic stuff: major yum, plus it's fair
    trade and healthy too!

(That reminds me that they also make cocoa and hot chocolate... Hang
    on....)

I bought some KMC a few weeks ago for the first time since the early
    80s!

Most of it has gone now, in small doses, it's too sickly really.
