went on. i am trekking machu picchu next september for autism and have
never done anything like this before. would appreciate any advice,

Collette your post did appear. Basically you can't specifically
"practice" for altitude in this country. The only training you can do
is by going to places that are at altitude. Most probably you will
only be able to do this on your actual trip. Don't worry, almost all
trips like yours have peopple who are not acclimatissed to altitude.
The trick is to gain altitude slowly to let your body get used to teh
altitude changes. The porganisers of your trip should have it
organised so that your approach walk is nice and slow and that each
day you slowly gain altitude over your provious day. This is the way
that everyone on treks becomes acclimatised to altitude.

You can help yourself before you go by doing as much walking (with a
light pack) as you can to build up your general fitness. When you're
doing your training walks you should be looking at building up your
stamina by walking relatively longer distances rather than bulding up
your speed by dashing over short distances. Whatever distance you
start with take it easy at first and build up.

Its fine skitting a regular but its lame to do that to someone who's
    genuinely confused /looking for help.

Who is skitting (whatever that means)? I posted what I did in a
genuine attempt to help the poster. What more could I have done?

I think you misunderstood, Steve. The 'this thread' referred to the
Google reference Andrew gave following your quotation. [I think he's
one of those chaps who think Google own usenet].

No, I am one of those chaps who like to help people and think that
Google provide the only comprehensive archive of Usenet following
their buyout of Dejanews. As you are so clever, perhaps you could
    educate me otherwise?

Sorry Andrew, my mistake. Your post read as a "Look Here [dimwit]" by
its brevity. I was obviously mistaken, thou art verily of great
goodness at heart and a purveyor of fine truths.

OK wrist slapped. Shouldn't have put in that last sentence. [BTW The
first sentence was supposed to be supporting you!]

  11. Yup, what reads fine to one person, can offend another.

At work there's quite a few who CAPITALISE any words or sentences they think
is important. The ammount of times I've sworn to kill the mug who wrote an
email to me only to find them an oldish little harmless woman....

    Jhimmy.

  12. Thanks very much to you all for the advice, much appreciated. Happy walking!
