Following all your excellent advice I today purchased an MSR Pocket Rocket stove. However, as the local Blacks had no MSR fuel, they sold me a Coleman cylinder instead, as the fit is the same. However, in testing the stove out this evening, (having followed the complex instructions, i.e. light match, turn flame adjuster), nothing is happening. Could this be:
1) The stove is malfunctioning. 2) The Coleman gas is not compatible with the MSR burner. Do they *only* work with MSR gas? 3) I've ballsed up somehow and not assembled it properly.
I think I am using Go gas with mine. No you don't need MSR gas but I don't know if there are different screw threads on different gas cans.
(Beware of the potentially patronising questions coming up!)
You have tightened the Pocket Rocket onto the thread, haven't you? I can always smell a small amount of gas when I screw the stove onto the gas. Perhaps try tightening it a little.
Also, there's no protective seal on the top of the gas cylinder, is there? And can you feel that there is gas in the cylinder? It should be heavy and sound like it has liquid in.
My money is on the stove not being tight enough against the gas cylinder. I seem to remember this happened to me when my PR was new.

Ta for replying Judith - and yes, PR was tightened onto thread as far as it would go (not a whiff of gas though), no - there is no protective seal, and yes, there's lots of gas in there! I think there must be something wrong with the stove!
I've only ever had one gas cylinder which failed to work with my pocket rocket - I think it was a Karrimor one, and it wouldn't work with another stove (but also an MSR) either. Basically, I think the pin which opens the seal is a slightly different length on some stoves than other. I find that Coleman cylinders do work with the pocket rocket but need to be screwed on very firmly.

It's more likely to be something wrong with the cartridge. Over the last two years I've come across a few cartridges that weren't manufactured correctly so that the pin in the stove didn't depress the valve in the cartridge enough for gas to flow.
I'd take it back to the shop and ask them to try it with another cartridge.
I've used the Pocket Rocket with Coleman cartridges without a problem.

Cheers
1) Possible but unlikely 2) No, my one works fine with Coleman 3) ..... I'll vote with Judith

I've had the same experience---discovered when I was well into the mountains, embarking on an unplanned bivouac in a snow-hole. Had a second cartridge, and managed to fix the faulty one by inserting a small fragment of plastic into the valve orifice, to sit on top of the mechanism.
Moral of the story---check that all such cartridges are working properly before heading into the mountains.

A friend of mine had a faulty Coleman's canister. I tried his canister on my stove and it didn't work, my spare worked on his.
Following all your excellent advice I today purchased an MSR Pocket

Ah, was right, too late... ye should've gone for the WindPro!
You are right! - 1) You were too late, and 2) I should've bought a Windpro!
Still, the PR was pretty cheap and will do the job for now (if I get another cylinder), but the Windpro looks a better bet for trips in the future as it does look a lot more stable. Ah well, its only money!

For solo trips I prefer the Pocket Rocket due to the lower weight. Stability needn't be a problem if you're careful. I also find the PR more powerful than the WindPro.

Did you sort it out?
Have you got another screw thread cylinder to hand? Perhaps you've got a paint stripper or a garden flame thrower that you could try the cylinder from? These cylinders tend to be long and thin (so not too stable with a pan of pasta on top!) but they're probably all propane/butane mix.
Let us know what the problem was when you solve it.

Ummm..doesn't take batteries does it?

I did a google to see what you were talking about (purely for academic research, you understand) and found that "Customers who shopped for this product also shopped for: • SpringStar Clothes Moth Alarm - 1 ea • SpringStar Flour & Pantry Moth Trap - 1 ea • OakStump Farms Yellow Jacket / Wasp Trap - 1 ea"
So we know that they ARE using it outside ...... whatever it is!
