Have you got another screw thread cylinder to hand? Perhaps you've got a paint stripper or a garden flame thrower that you could try the cylinder from? These cylinders tend to be long and thin (so not too stable with a pan of pasta on top!) but they're probably all propane/butane mix.

Following all your excellent advice I today purchased an MSR Pocket Rocket stove. However, as the local Blacks had no MSR fuel, they sold me a Coleman cylinder instead, as the fit is the same. However, in testing the stove out this evening, (having followed the complex instructions, i.e. light match, turn flame adjuster), nothing is happening. Could this be:
1) The stove is malfunctioning. 2) The Coleman gas is not compatible with the MSR burner. Do they *only* work with MSR gas? 3) I've ballsed up somehow and not assembled it properly.
As all the replies confirm, it seems quite a common problem. I turned up at the KIMM two years ago with two Coleman cylinders for my partner's EPIgas micro stove. Luckily I thought to check before the race and discovered that neither would release any gas. We were able to buy replacements at the race shop and on returning home got the cylinders swapped for GO gas cylinders. The faulty cylinders wouldn't release gas with my trangia gas conversion or Coleman Alpine stove either. It seems that the valves must've been too deeply set on that cylinder batch - gas would come out if you poked the valve with a fork prong! I have since purchased Coleman cylinders that were fine. Moral: Always check before setting off!!

I've used a Pocket Rocket in the past & been very impressed with its output. I tried the two smallest sizes of Coleman cartridge with it: one worked, the other didn't. Unfortunately I can't remember which one worked & which didn't. I tried 2 of each size, so it wasn't a just a faulty cartridge. Try the other size!

Well, you'll all be pleased to hear that I bought another Coleman cylinder just before the off, which worked just fine. However, as the sleeper down to Penzance was late, I missed the boat and had to fly to the Scillies instead and of course they took my 'kin gas off me! So, I had to purchase another Coleman one on St Mary's - which... of course... didn't work! (at first). I screwed the bugger on as tight as I possibly could, shook it up and eventually I did get an intermittent gas supply but not a brilliant effort. Not that impressed with Coleman cylinders success rate with the Pocket Rocket (2 out of 3 either not working at all or not very well), perhaps I'll buy an MSR one to see if they're any better.
