So far I'm stuck on a durable and reliable way of fixing the tube to the
cap without any leaks, and of making a mouth operated valve on the end of
the tube. My completely uncreative solutions are:
For the cap I'm thinking of using a plasticy wine cork and drilling it
out to accept the tube held in place with glue that'll stay a bit 'soft'.
The length of the cork will prevent the tube from opening up a hole for
water to escape as it flexes in use and abuse. The soft, flexible glue
will serve the same purpose.
For the drinking tube the easy thing is to blow the water back into the
bottle when you've finished but this means sucking on half a tube of air
everytime you want a sip. A (very well) washed valve from a shower gel
bottle might be persuaded to fit into the tube. This holds shower gel
in, but might not work with water 'cos it's less viscous.
Empty plastic bottle+cap - free; tube from B&Q - pennies; plasticy wine
cork - who cares (hic); glue - in the shed somewhere; mouth operated
valve - free (assuming you use the right brand of showergel).
Your grumpy-[censored] post seems to suggest buying a £x collapsable water
carrier with an £x pound platypus type drinking tube and spending about
the same amount as the expensive drinking 'system' dooberries cost
anyway. You're a genius.
