Yunno, Iggy, *anyone* can troll a newsgroup simply by pretending to be a
newbie and asking some semi-literate questions. The real skill lies in
maintaining a faithful following DESPITE being a complete [censored] (see:
thebillrodgers) or combining downright arrogance and contempt for your
readership with a genuine affection for a favoured few (see: np426z) or
simply being quite funny (see: MissAnneThrope).

Personally, I'm happy for you junior trolls - yourself, Rimmer, Virginiaz,
et al - to play here until you find your feet, but you really must try and
move your game forwards a little. You can't forever be satisfied sucking
in the easy guys. You'll have to work *much* harder to land the big fish
    in this particular pond.

It is not that I am completely averse to trolling -- it is fun, but
let me ask you: do you think that I am not going to run a half
marathon, and am simply pretending that I am going to do it? Would
    this state your opinion accurately?

But by doing so you'd be trolling me too, wouldn't you? Ah well, I've
nothing better to do at the mo', so...

Are you a runner? Yes. Why do I think this? Well, why else would
    *anyone* visit rec.running?

Are you going to run a HM? I'm guessing you've already run a few, so who
    knows?

Why are you here? Like me, you simply can't resist teasing runners who are,
in the main, a dull and introspective lot.

Thank you. I enjoyed your troll.

I'd have to argue that Igor goes beyond troll and qualifies for full-blown
"Usenet personality." It takes years of experience to develop an
appreciation for the Wonder Which Is Ig.

Argue all you want. If inane and unimaginative trolling merits the term
'Usenet Personality' in your book, then so be it. Me? I'd go for someone
who displays a quirky sense of humour, a dry wit, a mastery of syntax or an
armoury of unassailable put-downs. I guess it's the differences between us
    that make life such fun.

If it takes that long then is it really worth the effort?

Speaking of which, why do you use the prefix 'Dr'? If you are one, it's
unnecessary on Usenet where it's redolent of professional conceit. If you
    aren't, it's simply rather sad.

Quite right. It's much better (if one is a doctor) simply to mention the
fact casually at every possible opportunity, isn't it Roger?

Would it be a good idea to run 2.8 miles today and 5.6 miles tomorrow
(5.6 miles tomorrow would also serve as a test for my "hydration pack"😉.

Allow me to repeat my original reply...

That's difficult to say without knowing your running history for the past
several months. Normally you'd want to taper. However, If you've been
running 6 miles per week, I don't know if tapering is valid.

Ha! Medicate myself? No need. You try writing a short-notice 2000 word

several months. Normally you'd want to taper. However, If you've been
running 6 miles per week, I don't know if tapering is valid.

6-9 miles per week would be quite accurate. Some weeks I ran 2x, some
I ran 3x. I also ran 9 miles last week in one session.

You're training too little to have anything to taper from. Tapering is
relevant only for people who are doing significant time/distance in their
normal weeks. One part of the tapering training effect is that after you've
been training steadily and at a high level, your body gets accustomed to
the high work load and high frequency of application of that stress. So
it responds by rebuilding, quickly, to be stronger and more capable. In
the taper phase, your body overcompensates (since you don't go out, as
expected, and do another several miles tomorrow) and rebuilds more strongly
then 'necessary'. On race day, you take that extra and use it for extra
speed. That is, someone who is training well does. You're not training
    enough for this.

For the rest ... do whatever. After ignoring the fundamental good advice
of how to train reasonably to do a half marathon, and the excellent advice
of not doing a half marathon you're poorly prepared for, there isn't much
that can be said. If you were doing vaguely reasonable training, we could
apply some windage based on how your training differed from reasonable
training. As it is ... do what you choose and see what happens.

Not so many years ago I found myself finally a Dr, after 12 years of higher
education and a similar number of years of Usenet posting. What can I say--I
needed to replace my student e-mail account, and I was understandably rather
full of myself. You'll have to forgive me the natural conceit borne of
immaturity, seeing as I'm ever so much younger than yer bad self.

Nothing you do today is going to prepare you for a race that is less than
a week away, and you're screwing up the fundamentals (adequate training and
nutrition) so badly that some minor fiddling with the details isn't going to
    make much of a difference.

You've already made all the important decisions (and ignored all advice
pertaining to them), so I don't see why you can't make up your mind on the
    unimportant ones.
