  1. Allright, Donovans running without a watch, Tims running barefoot, and dougs
considering heterosexuality (yeah right), so not being one to be left out I
found myself counting my steps per breath. It was 4 or 5 steps (both feet) per
breath. So what does that mean?

I've gone back to the watch for most runs, though I still don't use it in
    group speedwork.

4 is the normal amount for running quickly -- I use this most of the time
during speedwork for example. Many people will drop to a slower rate (I use
    6) during more aerobic training runs. Sometimes at the very end of a tough
race I'll go down to 3.

I did my thing for science recently counting steps. I absolutely draw
the line at counting breaths. Next thing people will want to record
miles down to two decimal points and a watch on both wrists. At my age
I'm damn satisfied to able to define breathing as in and out and on my
    own.

    How shocking! ;-)

I'm usually fairly conscious of this -- I mean, you can usually hear yourself
breathe when you run, can't you ?

I think there are some here who already do that...

  6. It means you can multi task. Jogging while breathing is a good start.
Next week, we'll work on thinking while posting.

You guys are OLD. I'd much rather run barefoot at the beach with or without a
    watch and count BABES.

Well I'm certainly in no hurry, so that count was at a very slow pace.

    I prefer jogging without breathing.

With a straight face, no, I seldom if ever listen to my breathing. If
I'm with people I'm listening or talking. When alone I'm enjoying my
running environment. Even when I run from my house in a development I
look to see who painted their house, planted or cut down a tree, a new
dog on the front steps, etc. The only time breathing comes into play is
a road race(it's not an issue in ultra trails) and I don't do very many
of those. Breathing is an involuntary act and I'm enjoying that fact.

Lyndon, I'm shocked at this outburst! I thought you had sex with the
lights out and the sheets over your head. 😉 Wouldn't running bare from
the feet up help catch some babes and not just count them?

    the shore!

You dumbass. It doesn't mean anything. You dint specify what elevation
you were running and what speed you were running and whether you
    suffer from ashthma.

4 or 5 per breath in or breath out or a complete cycle?

I did my thing for science recently counting steps. I absolutely draw

I find that when I count steps (for cadence measurement and training),
my breathing automagically falls into a rhythm with the counts (maybe due
to too much time spent in school bands when a kid). After I'm warmed up,
if the pace and incline stays the same, the rhythm usually does also.
Usually one breath cycle per two or three foot cycles (that's an inhale
and exhale during 4 to 6 footfalls) at medium paces.

So I just notice my current breathing rhythm when counting cadence.
If it's one breath per 2 foot cycles and my cadence is 180 ff/min,
    for instance, then I just divide 180 by 4 (2 breaths-per-cycle times 2
footfalls-per-cycle) and get 45 breaths per minute.

    IMHO. YMMV.

A runner having sex? That's hilare! Even funnier would be him having it. Of
course his hand with a sockface on it doesn't count, but it's all he's got.

They'd die laughing, so unless he's into necrophelia it just won't work.
Besides, blowup dolls don't run very fast.
