  1. Hey guys/gals I've been lurking through the group for a while and while
I'm sitting at my desk at work I'm asking myself what is something
healthy to eat for lunch. I usually just hit a local bbq place and get a
1/4 pound of brisket, I know its not very healthy but any ideas you guys
    have would be cool.

    -Thanks

For me, it depends on what type of run I have planned. If it's a long or
hard run that I'll be doing 3 or 4 hours later, then I'll eat something
light, like a can of soup or a Lean Cuisine with some fruit. Then I'll have
a mid-afternoon snack of fruit and/or pretzel sticks, then maybe an energy
bar during the commute home. I work in a hospital. I haven't been in the
    cafeteria for over a year.

I forgot to add my meals for the whole day. I eat bacon and eggs for
breakfast, brisket or Lean Cuisine for lunch. Some peanuts and grapes
for snacks between. I'm not one for hard core running yet, I do about 3
miles every other day with cycling between.

    Thanks for the input!

Weight loss and good nutrition. I'm not the fastest or best jogger but I
enjoy jogging and anything that will make the process easier would be mice.

okay, peanut butter and grape jelly is a good snack for a runner, for sure. i
prefer strawberry or blueberry jam, myself.

and by the way, what is hard core? i'm kind of innocent about these thingies.

There are some things you need to understand about weight loss. If you
already understand these facts, then you need to "learn it, live it, and
know it." That's a quote from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. ;-)

Weight loss = (calories out) - (calories in). In other words, maintain a
caloric deficit by eating less than you burn.

Increase "calories out" by exercising more and thereby increasing the
    caloric deficit.

Decrease "calories in" by eating less and thereby increasing the caloric
    deficit.

1 pound of fat equals 3,500 calories. So you need eat 3,500 less calories
than you burn in order to lose 1 pound of fat. So say your metabolic rate
is 2,000 calories. You need to eat 1500 calories per day in order to lose
1 pound of fat in a week. You can increase your allowed calories and/or
lose weight faster by exercising more. My preference is to exercise more,
since that allows me to eat a lot.

How you achieve you caloric deficit is up to you. Personally, I prefer to
limit my fat and sugar intake by eating low fat and eliminating sweets.
This is contrary to the popular Atkins low-carb craze, but I believe low-
fat is healthier and a better choice for a runner that needs the extra
carbs for endurance. Also, if you are limiting your caloric intake, that
gives you a narrow window of opportunity to get your required nutrients,
so using up your daily allowance with fat and sugar is, IMO, a waste of
    calories.

I believe the most important key to weight loss is self motivation. I've
found that running combined with tracking my caloric intake and weight
loss are tremendous motivating factors. I track my caloric intake by
using a software application called DietPower http://www.dietpower.com.
I've achieved my weight loss goals, but I still use it to maintain my
loss and to track other nutrients in my diet. There are some others such
as FitDay http://www.fitday.com. Both have free trial versions that you
    can try.

Go running INSTEAD of eating lunch.

That's not really an "or." You're doing what I have already posted.
Eating less and exercising more, thereby increasing your caloric deficit.
Running during lunch is certainly one way of achieving that. I applaud
    you for that.

I haven't really worked out the logistics of running during lunch.
I work in a hospital with hundreds of showers and several dozen
treadmills, but they're only for patients. :-( In the mean time, leaving
early and running from home is fine.

Eat your own poo! Between that and drinking your wizz for your runs,

bacon and eggs every day ain't the best way to eat. grease/fat....

me - i wouldn't do that more than a couple of times per week. i prefer
more of a carb meal with oatmeal and whole grain toast, plus peanut
butter, raisins, honey, juice, fruit, etc.

for lunch - try sandwiches, soups, fruit, and lighter stuff. or other
hot meals which are less meat based. chicken rather than brisket, or
fish, or even a stir fry type of meal. pasta salad... stuff like that.

though i like peanuts, i now have almonds instead for snacks. they pack
a better punch for protein and i believe they are lower in fat. i eat
lots of fat-free pretzels for snacks, too.

  15. The important question is where are you getting your BBQ brisket from.
If you live in Kansas City, and you are NOT getting it from Jack
Stack's, that might be your core problem.

    Though I digress....

Seriously, though, I tend to make my own lunch to take to work because
the cafeteria options and the fast food outlets around me dont' thrill
me. Turkey Sammich, sometimes with guac, some leftover rice or pasta,
fruit, chips, carrots, you know, the healthy stuff.

Occasionally, I'll spluge and get an Italian Beef with fries. every
    few months.

Is a carb meal for breakfast & lunch ideal for someone who sits at their

    and water.

You know I would love to do that, but its a little hard if there are no
    showers at your office.

My employer is planning on moving to a building with showers and is only
a mile or so away from my house, so I plan biking and jogging to work. 🙂

Just wish we would move sooner

well, i was just telling you what *I* do for breakfast, and that it
would be a healthier choice than bacon and eggs each morning. now and
then is ok, but every day.... that's just a heart attack waiting to
    happen.

BTW, carbs are necessary whether you are very active or not. they are
the fuel that gets you through the day. take out the carbs and you'll be
dying for sugary snacks and drinks in between meals, just for the
(short-lived) energy burst from the sweets. and if you don't burn off
more calories (from whatever food source) than you bring in, then yes,
    it'll mean weight gain.
