Given that it's Cup weekend is anyone heading out on Sunday morning. I
think it might also be the start of daylight savings, if so, can I
suggest we start at 8:20 rather than 7:20 for this week.

I am in, horses? Screw that, I want to ride my iron horse instead.
8.20 sounds fine to me. My friend Irish Dave will probably show up.

Nice one, we often do the Beechworth to Everton section which is 18km of
pure downhill. Not much exercise but nice scenery and a ride my parents
can handle. I did the return ride one day (we leave cars at either end),
took a wrong turn and ended up on the road to Beechworth. I was riding
so hard it took me 45mins to realise I was on the wrong track. Man I was
stuffed that night, sprinting uphill all the way so the family didn't
have to wait too long.

Sounds fair enough. 7.20, 8.20, all the same, I suppose. See you there
once we sort out the time.
Doing the longer route out to St. Andrews again or are we 'taking it
easy'? (again, all the same)

If we do St Andrews there will be a compulsory bakery stop at Diamond
Creek (back me up here Nick).

I'll be wreaking havoc in Mildura at the

What Dave said.
I'm happy with either distance but I'm gonna need some calories along
the way. Obviously I'll be bringing more myself but Dymo bakery suits me
fine.
What does everyone else eat before a BR and how far is the ride for you?
I know Claes is probly around 100km, I think FD lives not too far away
from me too. How far is BR for you?
Cheers.

I've been having a reasonable bowl of Sultana Bran and a cafe late or two
(yeah, it messes with hydration, but I haven't really bonked or anything
yet. yet...). Last week I went through three bidons and a low fat fruit bar.
Ate another bar when in Balwyn with Dutch later, but don't really count that
as we were just tooling along and the ride proper was over. As I said, I've
felt fine on my four BRs - legs get a bit dead towards the end, but not that
bonked feeling.

Well, 100 k is right within a couple of ks. I had, last time, two bananas, one big bottle of sports drink, one big bottle of water, two, but only ate one, sportsbars, growling dog from musashi wild berry taste. They are only 2 bucks a pop, and pretty good on the bike. Like all bars they require 2-3 dl of water with it. Dave survived on three bananas and one bottle of sports drink. Worked quite ok for me. My Polar
reported me burning 3600 cal, which means you can eat rather alot on
the bike and not fear overdoing it. I do not think I spent that kind of energy but on the other hand, 3.5 hours of quite hard work, maybe?

Wow, all that food and only 2 bottles of fluid? Don't you sweat? How are
you meant to digest without water?
As much [censored] as I cop for triathletes carrying so much fluid, I can't
help but wonder what the disadvantage of this is, in training? The
biggest benefit of sports drink over water is that the little salt they
put in makes you drink more fluid, increasing your total consumption.
More on protein bars.
The choc growling dog bars are less hard-hitting than the berry,
particularly if you're riding early morning. I think they're the
cheapest bars on the market, but they're energy bars not protein bars,
similar to the standard powerbar in contents and texture. For some
reason they go on and on about their amino acids on the ingredients
listing, and they even tell you it's got ATP, good for you but where's
the evidence you can absorb it through diet?
Woolworths and Coles stock Aussie Bodies "Protein FX" which are yum, as
long as you don't get the caramel fudge ones, which are disgusting and
not at all like a mars bar. But the choc malt, choc mint and coconut
rough ones are like chocolate bars. I usually would have a protein bar,
because they're nice and filling, a banana, and for those 140km rides I
flesh out to a peanut butter and blackberry jam sandwich. Oh yeah,
that's good, it's got salt and sugar and protein and carbs and it's such
a morale booster.
Have a good weekend all.

Just out of curiosity, how many people would you get on one of these rides?
Are interlopers welcome to join this ride?
I live in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, and this ride sounds like a
good alternative to the same boring beach road ride I do most Sundays. Much
closer to home to, so I can avoid the boring ride from the suburbs to St
Kilda. I havn't done any serious riding since ATB, so this sounds like a
good way to get back into it.
Pardon my ignorance, I have only just started paying attention to the BR
threads.

And how hard core are they? Are lamers like me on a GV bike who
averages about 20km/h on his dalily commute going to be left for dust?

The more the merrier and it's definitely not hard core. The guys that
climb up from Warrandyte quickly wait at the top. It can spread out a
bit back to Greensborough but if on the off chance there is someone
slower than me, I'm happy to hang about. It's much nicer scenery than
Beach Rd and the people are nicer too.

Cmon down sasha! (or should that be up-down-up-down?) and TimC (what's a 'GV' bike?).
There are a mixture of speeds. Hills are a great leveller and you can only ride at your own pace. Numbers have slowly been growing. The first one was me, tonykara and DaveB. GeoffB has been a stalwart and over the last 8-10 weeks the numbers have ranged from 4-8. In that 4-8 there are some too hot, some too cold, and some juuuuuust right! Leaders wait at designated spots. Some go out hard and flake in the latter stages (Blah can testify to me doing that last sunday. major bonk!!!).
There's a couple of bailout options along the way.
I can see a map/handout coming along. i wonder if br.com is registered?...
... hah! its being 'squatted' at the mo...

Nah, I said I brought 2 bottles of fluid, I drank a total of four bottles. We refilled.
The chocolate growling dog I can not take on the bike, it is very hard to eat, just too heavy, the wild berry one is much better, for me at least. I'd say that for the 100 k spin the cheapest option is four bananas and plain water. For me bananas work really well on the bike.
