If it's a *proper* touring bike it will have mudguards/fenders, so the
headset will be almost zero maintenance :-)
It's the Long Haul Trucker, collecting parts for it right now. I'm
already catching [censored] from my riding buddies for wanting to put fenders
on it. However, it did rain today, and myself and probably a bunch of
others avoided today's Vintage bike ride and the unveiling of Brian
Baylis's latest because of it. If I had this LHT built, I would've been
there laughing. 🙂
After one 3-day rainy tour a couple of years ago I just left my fenders on.
I got a few offhand remarks about them, but I noticed on one winter club
ride last year 4 out of 7 of us were using them. I think a lot of people
think they slow you down, but riding with the same group, over the same
course, on a weekly basis for a few years now, my "before & after" says
they don't. The only downside of fenders is you have to be vigilant about
riding over any debris that could get picked up & jam them. I now have
full-time, full-length fenders on 3 bikes, rear fender on a 4th; the only
bike I don't have them on is my MTB. I hate getting sprayed in the winter,
the water isn't so bad in the warm months, but the grit really sucks. I
would often get home covered with it.
My club has a weekly Saturday morning ride in Vancouver. It's
fenders-mandatory (loosely enforced: no fenders means you ride at the
back) from when the weather turns wet (about the start of October) until
the weather turns dry (um, April? May? Never?).
Not just fenders are expected: a low-hanging mudflap on the rear fender
is considered part of the standard, and front flaps are just common
sense. The most popular extension is a halved water bottle.
Some riders use those funky SKS race fenders, which are quick-on and
quick-off, a boon for racers with only one road bike. But they don't
cover ahead of the fork or ahead of the rear seat stays, and that makes
a difference.
But our club-run Spring racing Series in April is fenders-forbidden.
Just one more piece of mess to hurt people is the theory, I suppose.
