Where is that generator?

  1. I recently read a message that contained a link to a Swiss made
    generator.

    Apparently, this has virtually no rolling resistance, an internal
    voltage regulator and put out a 'constant' voltage of about 6.2 volts.

    It seems that I have put the link in such a secret place that even _I_
    cannot find it.

    If someone here could send me that link, I would really appreciate it.

    Voltage regulators are available for bike light applications. Willie Hunt, who
    posts regularly on the Bikecurrent mailing list, makes and sells them. So you
    could cobble together your own rig that does essentially the same thing.

    No generator has zero resistance. The energy to turn it has to come from
    somewhere. But the best ones (hub generators) are over 60% efficient, which
    means they're drawing less than 5-6W from your legs -- barely noticeable.

    Generators are neato, but battery systems always work out a lot cheaper for me.

    ISTR that Willie Hunt's units are switching regulators intended for
    DC-DC use. Do they work with the AC output of a bike generator? Does
    the inductance of the generator coils bother them?

    Here's what I'm wondering - as a non-electrical guy:

    If I understand correctly, switching regulators like Willie Hunt's work
    by turning the voltage on and off very quickly, so the RMS output is at
    the desired level. (Willie Hunt's regulators feature very high
    efficiency, so little energy is wasted.)

    At the very least, it seems you'd have to rectify the generator's AC to
    feed into that regulator. This would involve some loss of efficiency.

    But would the rapid switching off of the inductive circuit generate a
    voltage surge as the magnetic field collapses? Would this fry the
    electronics?

    I suppose a related question is: Does anyone know the particulars about
    that Lightspin generator and its voltage regulation - the generator that
    started this thread?

    quick way to get DC from a LightSPIN.

    But , again, LightSPIN have suspended production indefinitely

    Yes, but probably not much. It might even increase overall system efficiency,
    if used carefully with the right combination of generator and bulb.

    No. The pulses of a PWM regulator have no different effect than AC pulses. The
    difference is that AC produces a sine wave, while a PWM regulator produces a
    square one, all on the positive side. There's no surge, just a very well
    controlled wave.

    I wonder too. I also wonder how it compares to others, efficiency-wise
    (pedaling power consumed per light output).
