Most mitochondrial proteins are encoded by nuclear DNA.
True. But w/o the mitochondrial contribution, you can't make properly functioning mitochondria...hence (apparently) the presence of "ragged red fibers" in certain neuromuscular diseases, in the elderly, in peripheral vascular disease, etc.

Of course both genetic contributions are crucial for properly functioning mitochondria, but without the nuclear component mice don't even make it to birth.
