Hi,
I am thinking of upgrading the bottom bracket and cranks and rings
that come with my Kona and noticed two Raceface ones which might do
the job: the evolve and deus. However the Deus costs nearly 4 times as
much. As a weekend rider it makes more sense to go for the cheaper
option but am I missing out – is the Deus far superior or more aligned
to the professional racer?

I'm assuming by "Deus" you are referring to the new x type with the outboard bearings. I can't speak for the Deus specifically but I do have the Shimano 04 XT version of the deus crank on my second and newly built up hardtail. Very similar crank and in fact the Deus bottom bracket is interchangable with the XT.
Of all the componentry upgrades on my new bike, the 04 XT crank is the handsdown most noticable performance difference in comparison to the square taper Shimano Deore on my other hardtail. The power transfer is just plain awesome. My own riding is strictly XC [no drops, jumps or urban assault] and this crankset rocks for that. Install is ridiculously easy [Deus is same] although it is CRITICAL that the bearings line up perfectly with each other. That will require having your BB shell faced. No big deal but it's a pro job with the pro tool. You'll have to figure that into the cost as well. Cost me $25 at my LBS.
Additionally, drive train parts wear together. Upgrading a crankset often means upgrading the chain, cassette, and possibly the rear derailleur cogs as well all depending on condition. Peformance can suffer when new components are matched with worn ones. Something else to determine and consider before you upgrade. As for pro exclusive definitely not but I'd also say that it's the experienced rider who rides a lot who'll enjoy the performance leap the most.
