Which fibre is your jersey made from?

I do wash the thing, but it shouldn't smell *this* bad. Just been out for a
10 mile ride, twas clean at the start (didn't smell it before I started
mind), and now it smells *much* worse than my armpits do...

You're sure you haven't fallen off, got covered in oil / cowshit etc then
blacked it out of your memory ?

I put one in a dishwasher once, with the normal dishwashing tablets/salt,
and it came up a treat. A tad snug afterwards though .. 😉
Take a trip to a supermarket and have a look on the detergents aisle ..
there's always loads of stuff to get rid of smells and stains, though I'd
guess a lot depends on the fabric and colours in the shirt.

I have one jersey like that. Here is what I do: wear another one
instead. I reserve it for washing crises.

Was this intentional or were you trying to do housework while a little
tipsy? Did your crockery survive tumble-drying?

Ecover liquid wash is what does the trick in this here household. 40 degrees,
synthetic cycle, no fabric conditioner, no tumble-drying, just straight out of
the washing machine, on to a hanger to air-dry.
Also helps that item is washed after being worn *once* I never allow the Unfit
Family to wear cycling gear more than once without washing.

I have lots of the cheap Aldi stuff and don't have the problem you describe.
Key (perhaps?) never wear more than once without washing it. I use Ecover
liquid wash at 40 degrees on a synthetic cycle. No fabric conditioner. Take it
out of the washing machine - straight on to hangers and allow to air-dry.
Works for the Unfit Family :-)

Lovely.🙂 You could try:
White vinegar in the wash water. Vinegar smell should be rinsed
later in the cycle. This works by softening the water so that
your detergent works better. You can use borax or baking soda for
the same effect without the vinegar smell.
Ammonia can be used on clothes that are not bleach safe. It will
kill all the bacteria that a relatively cool wash might leave
behind, and since most synthetics can't be boiled to kill the
nasties it's a good bleach/boil wash alternative.
Sorry I can't offer precise amounts here. I tend to just fling "a
bit" into the water, although I'm sure someone will soon be along
to tell you that New Scientist has a precise quantification of "a
bit".:-) Google will probably be able to provide you with
quantities, ratios etc.
Failing that, how about half an hour browsing the laundry
products in your local emporium? I've just had a look at our
online tesco and there doesn't seem to be anything specific for
dealing with nasty niffs but perhaps some of the ordinary washing
powders will claim to help.

Won't be that, never wear anything twice. Possibly hung around for 3 days
max before it's been washed.

Totally intentional. I surmised that if it could clean our dishes after I
had cooked, not a pretty sight, it could clean anything .. and the washer
used to clog just at the sight of 'real' dirt.
I've also used a dishwasher to clean myriad 'parts' from bikes, cars,
motorbikes, keyboards, and goodness knows what else. We currently don't
have a dishwasher ... and I need a carburettor cleaning, which came out fine
in a previous wash cycle .. 😉
Actually I had an old dishwasher which I used as a parts cleaner. Used to
use Gunk and other cleaning fluids in it, but the standard, cheapy cheap,
cheaper than a cheap thing bought in a cheap shop [1], dishwasher salts work
fine .. 😉

Yeah, but glowing into your clothes isn't going to have the same impact

See if washing same day it's taken off makes a difference.

If you dont find a solution to this problem and you are going to throw the
offending garment in the bin....
Try soaking it for 10 minutes in a very dilute solution (it is a bleach!) of
Milton sterilising fluid before you wash it.
I dont know if it will work but I'd be interested to find out. (this problem
has come up before on other forums)
Thanks.

I know it's probably a stupid question, but how long does it remain in the
washing machine before you hang it to dry?
I have some clothes which present the same problem if they remain even
just half an hour in there

Always wash cycling stuff in a non bio. I don't know why but it seems to
work.
