A cycling mate had a minor (minor for him, major for his Cannondale Ironman) crash a couple of days ago. Cycling home after our morning ride he had to grab the brakes hard as an idiot motorist decided to overtake and headed straight at him.
He said that when he braked (VERY hard) it felt like the back wheel turned to liquid. The rider behind said the bike dropped just before he plowed into my mate. It would have been carnage if they hadn't rolled out the way of an oncoming car (which didn't stop BTW).
Anyway a few scratches and bruises between them... BUT.... my mate's chainstay has a clean break just on the wheel joint. He swears that he felt the "snap" when he braked and it was not an impact break
Cannondale were no help at all and suggested he try and find a dealer in Australia to "assist" with a frame exchange.

Not helping, but.. why was he braking "hard" with the rear brake? That's not gonna stop near as quickly as front braking.

Just spoke to him... said he grabbed both brakes with equal force. He felt the back end do a slo-mo fish tail sort of thing.

I can't remember where you are.. these are Melbourne bike shops which I'm sure sold Cannondale, that's all. SBR is in St. Kilda somewhere and ACR is cnr. Burwood Hwy and Warrigal Rd.
They don't actually have ANY aussie dealers listed on their website.. pretty poor..

I think I found a company who may be able to repair the frame. Grip Sport (Melbourne) claim:

I'd try for a warranty if possible but otherwise Gripsport can fix your frame. Good work for a fair price.
I'd push them on that! the frame snapping from braking sounds fairly pathetic IMHO
you should get some eyewitness statements from your mate and the guy whom saw it from behind collapse BEFORE the collision

Just got a reply from Grip Sport they say - we emailed them a pic of the damage:
"It also looks to me as if the chain stay had been cracked (probably almost all the way through - down at the dropout) BEFORE you slammed on the brakes. That's a very common area for road bikes to go and explains how the entire chain stay simply "folded" when the brakes were applied."
They say they can fix it no problem... cost not bad... 2 weeks turnaround.
Just got to find an economical way to get it from Fiji to Melbourne.
