Can you use a 9 speed chain on Sora derrailleurs (8 speed cassette)? Or,
use an 8 speed chain with 105 derrailleurs (also an 8 speed cassette)?

Use the chain that matches the cogs in the back, not the ders. If 8s, use an 8s
chain, if 9s, use a 9s chain...for best performance.Peter Chisholm

My LBS said it didn't matter, but a search through google groups,
majority opinion agrees with you. The only ones that thought about using a
9s chain on 8s cogs was to stop chain rub up front. That sounded like a
strange solution to that problem. Thanks. -

Yer bike shop is FOS. I suspect they are too lazy to get 8/9 and 10s chains so
they cross pollenate 9s with opthers. A certain MO place here in the Republic
does that too.Peter Chisholm
