My LBS said it didn't matter, but a search through google groups,
majority opinion agrees with you. The only ones that thought about using a
9s chain on 8s cogs was to stop chain rub up front. That sounded like a
strange solution to that problem. Thanks.

Yer bike shop is FOS. I suspect they are too lazy to get 8/9 and 10s chains so
they cross pollenate 9s with opthers. A certain MO place here in the Republic
does that too.
