  1. My sons friend crashed his bike on the path beside the Water of Leith
yesterday and skint his knee badly.

I could cope with the thought of loosing some skin but what made me cringe
was hearing that at A & E they cleaned the wound with a tooth brush.

And given the funding crisis, I shudder to think how long that
toothbrush'd been in the orthodontics dept first....

Common practice. Some use nail brushes! I tended to prefer a dry gauze swab.

Seriously, it's really important to get all the muck out of a wound.

I hope son's friend heals well.

There's worse -- they make you do it yourself! I once attended A&E with
burns from an electrical plug full of water blowing up in my hand. I
was given a tin of Swarfega and a nail brush and told to clean the
plastic out of the wounds. When I said, somewhat plaintively, "Can't
you do it?" the answer was "It will hurt a lot less if you do."

The most recent two trips to A&E have been cycling related, but involved
blood and large needles, so you probably would be happier not knowing
    the details....

I hope the person with tonsilitis was ahead of him in the queue, and the
ones with VD and piles were later!

The toothbrushes *are* sterilised between patients...

I'm dreading tomorrow - a visit back to the hospital after last
weekend's trip to A&E my first non-cycling related visit for many many years.
I've presently a fractured nose, a couple of fractured ribs and lots of
bruising after a completely unprovoked assault last Saturday. Now the
swelling's gone down they want to assess for what they call 'cosmetic re-adjustment'.

All I want is them to fix it so I can take the trice out for a camping
weekend at a music fest on Saturday.

That was the way 15 years ago as well. Still the best way to clean grit out
    of wounds.

Yes. I don't think it would be a 'previously unused' toothbrush though.

Except this is the Scottish NHS which is not under-funded and is doing
    very well.

I do hate to say it, but if autoclaving is not done these
days for hypodermic needles, why would it be acceptable for
    toothbrushes?
And you'd expect packs of cheap brushes to be the same cost as
    sterile syringes, no?

The scars have mostly gone, but this does bring back memories of havign
gravel scrubbed out of my arm with betadiene (sp? orange sterilising stuff)
and a nailbrush. They were kind enough to add a bit of lignocaine to the
first wash so it didn't hurt very much.

Our gp when I was 14 just fumbled about a bit with some tweezers. This
resulted in interesting pusformations later on when various bits and
pieces were making their way out....

If you think waiting nearly a year to see a consultant from first referral
is 'doing very well'... and then having to wait nearly another year becasue
you were sent to the wrong specialist first time round..

    I doubt it.

Small syringes cost a few pence (<10p) each. They are ordered and used
    in bulk, thoughout a hospital.

I don't think these economies of scale apply to toothbrushes when even a
large A&E department will only use 10 or so per day and toothbrushes may
    cost around £1.
