There's worse -- they make you do it yourself! I once attended A&E with
burns from an electrical plug full of water blowing up in my hand. I
was given a tin of Swarfega and a nail brush and told to clean the
plastic out of the wounds. When I said, somewhat plaintively, "Can't
you do it?" the answer was "It will hurt a lot less if you do."

Sounds like a reasonable excuse.

I think that must be common - my local A&E department uses them too
(but I can't remeber what they measured when I was there last).

(all I can think off is the unit was outwith operating temperature,
but that would require the temp to be well outside comfort levels)
maybe a quick check in the B & Q store would have
shown that the scale was out >1%.

The bubbles are usually held in a rotating cage seem to
remember something about hold the level against a known
vertical and adjust accordingly then hold it with the otherside
against the vertical a bit of jiggery pokery later the bubble
should give a vertical/horizontal indication when the edge
of the level is vertical/horizontal, as stored in the shop levels
can be wildly out so this 'calibration' should be applied to
ALL levels, from B & Q specials right to cost a fortune levels.

It had occurred to neither of us that there was a possibility of a
misgraduated scale. The friend who originally bought the spirit level
never checked the scale either (No doubt he wanted to check
horizontality). We have loads of perfectly adequate steel tape measures
(and a metric 'yardstick TAAW!). We didn't expect this to be
miscalibrated...until we found that it was!

I know David started work on his observatory in the winter but plastic
doesn't shrink tat much in the cold, does it? Ambient temperatures may
have been around freezing at the very least (London seldom freezes)

No it wasn't Ringwood, but not too far away.
Meanwhile the assailant was arrested and presently on bail.

I'm to go back to Winchester Hospital on Tuesday for some surgery on my
nose and to have the bones re-aligned. Meanwhile the ribs are still
playing up when on the bike, but the recumbent seems OK.

So if anyone's at the Winchester Alt Transport Day on Wednesday or the
the Cycle Show in Islington on Thursday 23rd, I'm the one with the
enormous hooter :-(

Anyone know how long a fractured nose takes before the aches go away?

'Fraid not. I sometimes go through Ringwood and my trike has sometimes
been parked outsde The Inn on the Furlong, but not for some time.
The trike is pink anyway, while the trice is a dark metallic purple.
