  1. I have an older (80's?) Guerciotti which originally had a Shimano 26 X
24 T bottom bracket and a really strange crankset, I think it was a
Dura Ace. The pedal bolt that the crankset accepted was very large -
about an inch or larger. Since I couldn't use this crankset with
modern pedals, I replaced the bottom bracket and crankset with Campy.

I gave the crankset away and kept the bottom bracket.

Now, I have found an older Italian Pinarello (80's?) frame for which I
have no bottom bracket or crankset. It appears that the bottom
    bracket will fit just fine.

Does anyone know which older cranksets (that stand a chance of being
available on eBay or loosescrews, etc...) will fit this bottom
    bracket?

Would I be better off getting a whole crank & bottom bracket? If so,
    which one(s)?

Thanks for your help. This newsgroup is great!

Sounds like Shimano's "Dyna Drive" to me. The name may help:

A quick google found a crank and pedals to match (for sale)
    http://www.firstflightbikes.com/cranks-p.htm

Don't know whether the corresponding bottom bracket was compatible with
other cranks, but your range of choices could be much wider than using a
    dyna-drive crank.

You're describing the Dura-Ace AX series crank which used a 109 mm.
symmetrical spindle (for Italian threaded [36x24] bottom bracket
    shells) with a JIS taper.

Symmetrical 109 mm. spindles with JIS tapers have been used in a
number of Japanese track cranks (Shimano 7500 and 7600 models, Sugino
75 and Grand Mighty), but offhand I can't think of another road model
that employed this exact configuration. Campagnolo Victory and Record
C cranks used a 109 symmetrical spindle, but differences in the taper
type (Campagnolo = IS0) may or may not engender chainline issues.

Yes. It's almost always best to use the crank and bottom bracket
models that were designed to pair with one another.

There are scores of good cranks from respected manufacturers like
Campagnolo, Shimano and Sugino. Pick one that fits your budget and
    fancy.

    Ain't it though.

If you measure the axle length, we may be able to help you. Since you
like Campy, just buy the cranks with matching BB.

BTW, did you throw away those terrible performing brakes too? I would
love to have them if you still got them. Hint: the AX is collectible
stuff (in my book). You should have kept or Ebay those cranks.

Not completely true- adaptors to mount conventional pedals to AX
cranks have been available for 20 years:

Too bad you sold it- it's good for "whuttheheckizat" kinds of
    questions.

    The axle is 109 mm.

No, the bike had Modolo brakes. Sorry 'bout that.

What I'm trying to do is the minimum to get the bike working so I can
determine if I'm going to get a nice fit (I have several Cinelli
stems), determine if the frame is straight. If I find I like the way
the bike rides, I'll probably hunt down Super Record stuff - or swap
some Chorus components from my Guerciotti with the "new" bike.

The "new" bike is an 80's Pinarello and needs an Italian BB. The rear
spacing is 126mm - or at least a 7 speed wheel fits & spins well.

Some cranks I've noticed on eBay:

    Shimano/Dura Ace

    or maybe Campy:

    or Suntour:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7101789236

Would any of these "work" with my bike? And if they can, which
(Italian) BB should I go shopping for?

Does someone know of a website that could help me understand
    crank/bb/frame compatibility?

    Thanks for all the help.

BINGO! I'm pretty sure these fit a 107mm bb, though the tapers may be
slightly different, I think they would work.

All the other cranks you linked to need a longer spindle.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline/

Crank/BB compatibility is the main thing. Standard road chainline is
43.5mm +/-1.5mm and that's what you get with correct crank and bb. So
normally the frame doesn't have much to do with it.
