It's that simple if there are very small numbers of them, but if irregular
posts aren't pointed out, those small numbers could quickly grow and
suddenly the signal to noise ratio becomes that of other newsgroups (which
have become nearly worthless for on-topic content). Rapid "enforcement"
helps let others (who might have posted something similar) know that it's
not something that should be part of a particular newsgroup.

My guess is that Jym might not have been so vociferous if the original
postings hadn't also gone to rec.bicycles.marketplace (where they definitely
belong), indicating some awareness of the appropriate location.

As others have pointed out, no one really has to register in
the sense that you are registered in cyclingforums and use
that to access rec.bicycles.tech.

This post, for example, will come from a place unknown to
cyclingforums, which simply imports what it sees posted from
numerous places to rec.bicycles.tech.

There is no obvious way to discover that I have a secret
identity as registered user "carlfogel" on cycling forums,
just as no one can possibly realize that Clark Kent looks
just like Superman unless his glasses fall off.

I suspect that my commitment to the integrity of these
forums remains at the same level whether I'm posting as a
registered user or not.
