=x= The whole point of rec.bicycles.marketplace is that
messages such as these be posted there AND NOT ANYWHERE
ELSE. Cross-posting is spamming.

<_Jym_>BFD, <_Jym_>. If you see FS in the subject line, don't read it. It's that
simple. Jail time must have made you a little testy.Dave

It's not span - I'm just trying to sell a freaking bike - but thanks for the
explanation of newsgroup protocol, <_Jym_>. Cross-posting isn't spam - I'm
just trying to cover all the bases - why don't you work on solving some of
the more pressing problems in the world."Jym Dyer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

You were probably the kid that snitched on everyone else in school, too - a
real goody-goody - now you've graduated to being one of those newgroup
cops - hope that discovering my crime made your day.

I'm puzzled. Since you didn't trim and "Texas Yankee" top-posted, just who
in the hell are you talking about?Dave

<_Jym_>BFD, <_Jym_>. If you see FS in the subject line, don't read it. It's
that
simple. Jail time must have made you a little testy. It's that simple if there are very small numbers of them, but if irregular
posts aren't pointed out, those small numbers could quickly grow and
suddenly the signal to noise ratio becomes that of other newsgroups (which
have become nearly worthless for on-topic content). Rapid "enforcement"
helps let others (who might have posted something similar) know that it's
not something that should be part of a particular newsgroup. My guess is that Jym might not have been so vociferous if the original
postings hadn't also gone to rec.bicycles.marketplace (where they definitely
belong), indicating some awareness of the appropriate location.--Mike-- Chain Reaction Bicycles

I find it interesting that this thread about newsgroup etiquette and protocol has gone on this long and none of those having the discussion are even actual registered users of the site. That, to me, shows your actual level of commitment to the integrity of these forums.

ahimsa,Due to some clever packaging you may think you are participating in a
web forum, but in actual fact you have ventured into the world of Usenet
a strange place with many thousands of newsgroups, another dimension of
the internet. You will not find me registered on the forum either although at various
times it will appear I have participated.Marcus

thanks for the guidance.Dear Texas Yankee,
For whatever it's worth, I don't even remember which
response was yours--But I don't care now because a handsome post like the one
that you just wrote will wash away practically any sins
committed in newsgroup mud-wrestling contest.Cheers,

As others have pointed out, no one really has to register in
the sense that you are registered in cyclingforums and use
that to access rec.bicycles.tech.This post, for example, will come from a place unknown to
cyclingforums, which simply imports what it sees posted from
numerous places to rec.bicycles.tech.There is no obvious way to discover that I have a secret
identity as registered user "carlfogel" on cycling forums,
just as no one can possibly realize that Clark Kent looks
just like Superman unless his glasses fall off.I suspect that my commitment to the integrity of these
forums remains at the same level whether I'm posting as a
registered user or not.Bruce Wayne
