I've ridden it a few times in the triathlons that I've participated in there (Florida Challenge and Great Floridian). I'm not sure what the grade is but I required a 39/25 (700C wheels) to get up it without straining. If I had to guess, I'd say the bottom half is probably 10-11% and the top half is around 8%.

what passes for a mountain in FL... ;-)A quick look at it on TopoUSA says the west side's 7% avg, east and south
are 6% avg. Very short max bits on the west at 12%, east at 15%. Topo's
not the most accurate source in the world, as slight errors in the road
overlay can result in big errors on gradient, but with dead-straight roads
like those it's less likely to be off by much. The hill gains about 200ft

Dear Steve,
Here's the terraserver topo view of the west side:
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=12&x=537&y=3948&z=17&w=2
The towering 307 foot peak is to the east. You can zoom in
to absurd detail. This being Florida, the contour lines are at 5-foot
intervals. The steep part, for example, from south of the clay pit to
the west to the 250 foot subsideriary peak, shows the road
rising steeply around the corner from 125 feet to 250 feet
in 500 yards, which is 125 feet in 1500 feet, or an 8.3%
grade. The steep part up to the 305-foot summit starts at 205 feet
and levels out sharply at 275 feet, a 75-foot gain in about
200 yards, or 75 feet in 600 feet, a 12.5% grade.To the east, it looks like a 85-foot straight drop in 450
yards from 240 feet down to the Coast Line tracks at 155
feet, 85 feet in 1350 feet, or 6.3% grade. For comparison, here's the S-bend down the gully 40 seconds
from my driveway on the bluff above the Arkansas River in
Pueblo, Colorado:http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=11&x=1327&y=10588&z=13&w=1
It's the modest curve above and to the right of the 4750. It
reaches 9% for a few feet in the first curve in its 50-foot
plunge to the flat runout at 4700 feet to the river.Somehow, I doubt that Alpine gearing or great descending
skills are necessary.Carl Fogel

few years back, too. (The one in the Parksville quad, close to a YMCA
camp!) 312 vs. 1642 feet, and that's just the foothills, folks! I'd
hate to have to lug a bike to the top of the Tennessee version!Pat

If you're a fat rich republican not only do you get what you want with
elections, but you also consider riding a 300 foot elevation on a bicycle to
be scaling a mountain.Quoted message said:

Dang, Chalo, Queen Anne hill would be like the Everest of
Florida. I commute home along the Willamette River and then take
a mile jog up through Riverview Cemetery (near the foot of the
Sellwood bridge) to get home. That is about a 400 foot elevation
gain -- and basically a speed bump in the westside landscape. I
do miss the fact that urban Portland does not have any long
climbs like Page Mill or the various ascents to Skyline in the SF
Bay Area. You have to get way east toward Mt. Hood before you
can do any climbs with more than a two thousand foot gain. -- Jay
Beattie. -

There you go again with your rapier-like wit!
I'll say it again; you don't legitimize whatever bogus point you were
trying to make by calling someone fat, gay, Communist, or whatever
other irrelevant thing your stunted intellect causes you to flatulate
out. You just make yourself look like a jerk, and a bigoted one at
that.If that was your aim, then carry on as you like.

But I don't live there anyway, and I was somewhat mistaken about the
elevation at my place on Capitol Hill. I misread a cluttered topo
map's contour line to read "400", which I interpreted as feet, when it
was actually 100 meters-- that's 330 feet. It's still a mountain by
Floridian standards, though.Quoted message said:

Tomorrow's the 3rd anniversary of 9/11, Chalo. Many brave Americans --
among them Patrick Tillman -- gave their lives (*IN AFGHANISTAN*) fighting
those who harbored and supported the murderous, terrorist slimeballs who
perpetrated that vile act. I would think someone like you -- who calls
someone like Tillman a murderer and a coward and God knows what else --
would have thick enough skin to withstand a few "you're a gross, fat ugly
pig" remarks from people like me who deplore what you say and believe, and
lash out with relatively mild personal attacks in response. Guess not. Too
[censored] bad.Even nutsacks like Howard Dean supported U.S. actions in Afghanistan, but
you're so blinded by some pathetic, outdated ideology that you resort to
hate-filled, incendiary remarks. You obviously want a reaction; I'm happy
to oblige.Bill "haven't seen even one person support your view of Tillman, by the way,

It looks like it rises ~210ft in 900yds for an average grade of just under 8%
The steep part from 125ft to 215ft takes about 300yds for an average grade of 10%. It looks like the first 25ft from 125ft to 150ft take ~70yds for a grade of ~12% -

Didn't say or imply that it was. Do you agree with Chalo? (Google it if
unsure; got quite a response IIRC.)Bill "devout pacifists don't spew hate-filled bile" S.

Dear Bob,
You're absolutely right (at least I think you are).
I got lost amidst all those towering 300+ foot Floridian
mountains. If I've got the right spot now, Highway 455 drops southward
about 95 feet from the east shoulder of the Sugarloaf
massif, from about 205 feet down to about 110 feet in about
400 yards, or 1200 feet, about an 8% grade.Further south is a climb that might be 35 feet in 50 yards,
or 150 feet, an impressive 23.3% grade--but perhaps a bit
short to reach terminal velocity.I had no idea that Florida was dotted with so many closely
packed peaks. I wonder whether some of them are still
unclimbed?Carl Fogel

"king of the mountain"Dear Chalo,
I've made so many typos and miscalculations lately (I missed
Sugarloaf Mountain by a mile or so!) that I'm delighted to
point out that 100 meters is 394 feet, so your original 400
foot estimate turns out to be darned good anyway, a margin
of error of slightly less than plus or minus one Chalo. It would be nice if the various free maps available included
an obvious legend on the maps themselves explaining whether
meters or feet are being used. I know enough about Colorado
elevations to be able to tell at a glance (5,000 to 14,000
around the front range is feet, anything less is meters),
but in Florida and the Calfornia or Washington coastlines
I'm out of my depth, to mix a metaphor.Carl "39.4 or fight!" Fogel

What I believe is that Pat Tillman was so moved by the events of 9/11 that
he gave up millions of dollars and an NFL lifestyle to go fight those he
(and nearly everyone) thought responsible for the attacks. A better man
than I, no doubt.I don't understand Chalo's position (calling Tillman a gutless murderer and
worse). I mean, if the US doesn't have the right to retaliate against those
responsible for killing close to 3,000 innocent people on its soil and
severely disrupting its economy, then he must think it's NEVER justified to
go to war. I remember asking him that, and don't recall ever seeing a
reply. Also, let's say someone is an avowed pacifist. No war is ever OK, no matter
what. I can accept that (although not agree with it, obviously). What
motivates that person to single out one (obviously idealistic) soldier for
vitriol, ridicule and scorn? Doesn't such hatred and meanness betray the
very point of being a pacifist?I have a dime-store psychological theory in this particular case, but since
it involves that someone's morbid obesity as an excuse to be hateful and
contrary to overwhelming public opinion just to garner attention I won't go
into it.Bill "that's what I think" S.

/faux pas/ in France and far too rational to belong in a British
measurement system. 100m is definitely 3,937 inches, but the Brits
must have learned to count their inches on their woefully inbred
king's superfluity of toes. Hence 3937/12 or 328.083 feet.Chalo Colina
