    LOL

Help a simple, unassuming man, like myself, out if you would. What's funny
    in this joke?

Nothing at all, as far as I can see.

I posted it after psycho made a "joke" that was offensive to the French (and
challenged the humorless to complain) to show, perhaps, that making "jokes"
about actions where people are slaughtered may or may not be humorous, depending
    on your viewpoint.

I first saw this "joke", posted on a humor newsgroup by an American after the
Concorde crash. The German dead were the butt of the "joke". (This was within an
    hour of the crash).

Complaints about its inappropriateness brought the expected riposte of lack of
    sense of humor.

Unfortunately, the actions of the French, in wanting to obey international law,
and wait until the weapons inspectors had done their job has merely shown the
Americans alleged love of free speech up for the sham it is: "Free speech is
fine, so long as you don't say anything I disagree with"

Of course, Bush didn't dare wait for the weapons inspectors to finish the job.
He wanted the war, and knew perfectly well that there was a very slim chance
that they were going to find any WMD.

So he took the US into an illegal war and has made the world an even more
dangerous place, and the really funny part is that he's using that to get people
    to vote for him.

The sad part is that there seem to be tens of millions stupid enough to fall for
    him.

    Yet more political jokes!

Certainly there's a better NG for your jocularity.

Your problem doesn't seem to be humor or lack of it.
Your problem is your sense of humor seems to be
    poltically driven.

Not many could turn a Leno snippet on Franco-German
rivalries into a diatribe against George Bush.

    Good work.

Inquiring minds won't be satisfied by the level of discussion on Leno. They
talked about the proximity of the crowds on Alpe de Huez. Lance said,
"that's been part of the sport for 101 years." They talked about Robin
Williams. Lance said he'd be back for #7, but wouldn't say if it'll be next
year or the year following. The only really standout thing was when he said
he's considering running the NYC marathon. He wasn't kidding, but he wasn't
committing, either. Oh, they talked about his cancer projects just a
little. What struck me was the reaction to him by the audience. It was
like he was being cheered like a conquering hero. Huge crowd response. I
saw a few folks in the audience waving yellow jerseys. It was kinda
    remarkable.

But I thought the best Lance-related thing on the show was in Leno's
monologue. He said, " Lance Armstrong has conquered France more times than
    Germany."

Now lets hear all you thin-skinned, humorless folks out there flame me for
    repeating that.

    OK, let's.

And let's hear all you thin-skinned, humorless folks out there flame me for
    this piece of paraphrasing:

Q: What do you call 3000 dead Americans in the twin towers?
    A: A start.

Did you think that was funny, psycho ?

Let me know if you didn't, and I'll tell you the "joke" from which it was
    paraphrased.

So I'm channel surfing late last evening and I see that Leno has the
Teutuls on the show. I'm thinking perhaps this is a rerun, but I hang
in to see if it's a new show. Then I notice this guy sitting next to
Paul Sr., and I'm thinking to myself, "Hey, that guy looks a bit like
    Lance."

I missed the Lance interview, but I got to see the part where Mikey
rides on stage on the "Lance Armstrong Tribute Chopper". Pretty cool,
    if you like choppers. ;-)

The first time I heard a joke like this, it was, 'What do you call
1,000 lawyers at the bottom of the Pacific? A good start.'

If you had never heard the lawyer version of this 'joke,' I can
imagine there being not one hint of humor. I would bet that something
like this joke has used a variety of groups- Jews, blacks, women,
gays, etc. etc. In each case, revulsion should dominate.

Except for the lawyer version, that is.... now *that's* funny!!

Interesting that you choose to castigate me when it was actually psycolist who
started the political thing by making offensive jokes about the French.

Not that that was in any way politically motivated of course, oh no.

You seem to have just skipped the actual root of the problem, and zeroed in on a
post that you did not agree with politically.

Some might consider that hypocritical, but I wouldn't dream of making such an
    accusation.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that "Ken Case" and "Mike Beauchump" are the
same person? And the "psycho" in this case (no pun inteneded re. Case) was
Jay Leno, who made a joke at France's expense, so that justifies a
despicable comment like the 3000 dead one?

I've seen people with comrehension difficulties on usenet, but, Bill, you take
    the biscuit with the above.

Let me try to explain it in easy steps:

    1) psycholist posted an anti French joke which alluded to conflicts in which
    MILLIONS were slaughtered.

    2) He then tried to pre-empt any critisism by challenging "humorless
    individuals" to complain.

    3) I paraphrased a "joke" that had originally been made at the expense of the
Germans in such a way that psycholist might begin to appreciate that racist
jokes aren't so funny when it's YOUR people who are the butt of the "joke".

The fact that someone found it funny is rather sad, but really rather beyond my
    control.

I just don't like racist posts. There's nothing I can do to actually prevent
them, but I would hope, occasionally, to educate the more intelligent as to
    their offensiveness.

The fact that you fail to find the posting of the mean-spirited anti French joke
offensive, but find the mean-spirited anti American one so is, to my mind, just
    a demonstration of simple hypocracy.

You're right, I misread the thread. I thought Mike Beauchump posted the
awful, hateful joke when in fact it was you. (He merely added a LOL to
    something about 3000 dead Americans.)

If you really think that Leno's joke (and Bob's re-telling of it) warrant
that kind of vitriol, have at it.
