  1. Hi i replaced my bottom bracket on my giant nrs 950. I used a shimano xt (square taper) as a replacement, now i have a few queries first of all my crank is in a diffrent position it sits further from the frame i know this because i had to adjust my limiter screw is this ok 😕 , and i am also getting an anoying creek sound when i pedal. I installed the bb with copper greese and used the torque setting from the shimano service manuals for both the bb and crank 😄 any you guys any idea where the creeking is coming from

any ideas would be great 😎

  2. Bottom bracket spindles generally come in two varities 108mm and 113mm, though it is possible to find other lengths. This is the measurment of the width of the "axel" in the bottom bracket. The second measurement is the width of the shell, which can come in either a 68mm or 73mm width. Are you sure you purchased the same spindle width as the bottom bracket you took out? Some cranksets are designed to work better with the shorter spindle, (like Race Face cranks for example).

If you did purchase the correct width, there is always a little bit of a difference in how far your cranks will slide on if you switch bottom brackets. If you had to adjust the front derailleur a bit, as long as everything is still shifting clean, you should have no worries. It is totally unlikely your feet will notice that they are a couple mm further away from the frame when you pedal.

As far as the creaking goes, are you saying that the creaking started as soon as you put the new bottom bracket in, or was the creaking there from before?

    Cheers,
    Juba

  3. cheers for the help mate, i measured the original bb (68-113) before buying the new one so it should be the same size, i will recheck the size tonight once i get home from work, as for your question about the creek coming with the new BB im not to sure because i had not been out riding for a few months before changing the bb but the last time i was out it was fine

    cheers mate 🙂

  4. tonight i will strip down and greese my v8's and see if that helps any and work through everything else bit by bit til i resolve the creeking

    cheers for the help 🙂

  5. When you installed your bottom bracket, what specifically did you grease? You should have greased the inside of the bottom bracket tube on your frame, including the threads where the bottom bracket cups screw in. Grease the inside of the cups, where the bottom bracket shell sits. A light layer of grease on the bottom bracket shell itself (to prevent corrosion). Install the bottom bracket to the recommended torque specs. Thoroughly clean the square tapers on the spindle and square holes in the crank arms (square tapered crank attatchment should not be greased, which is different from splined cranks which are greased). Install the crankarms. Grease the threads of the crank bolts and torque them down to manufacturer specs.

If this is how you installed the bottom bracket, the creak is likely elsewhere. There is a small chance that the bearings on your bottom bracket are making that noise, but if it is an XT that has never been installed before, chances are very slim that is the issue.

As a minor point, copper grease was primarily designed to withstand high-heat. For mountain bikes, copper grease is useful where applicable on disc brakes. I am unsure if copper grease has the potential to harm rubber seals, so a more generic bike grease might be useful for generic bike applications(many mechanics choose a lithium based grease).

    Cheers,
    Juba

  6. hi thats some good info mate cheers, i greesed the threads on my frame and on the bb itself and the threads of the plastic cup i didnt greese inside the cup i did greese the square taper crank attachments oops :o, i will reinstall tonight with your instruction thanks for the help mate really appreciated 😄

    cheerz 🙂
