What is ARDS?
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is a devastating, OFTEN FATAL,
inflammatory disease of the lung characterized by the sudden onset of
pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, usually in the setting of other
acute medical conditions resulting from local (e.g. pneumonia) or distant
(e.g. multiple trauma) injury. As its name implies, ARDS is a syndrome, or a
condition defined by a group of signs and symptoms. In some cases accurate
diagnosis of ARDS is difficult. To physicians, the disease is primarily
manifest by difficulty in achieving sufficient oxygen levels in the blood;
by changes in the mechanical properties of the lungs; and by chest x-ray
abnormalities
Treatment for ARDS is initiated as soon as possible to minimize the chance
of death and to avoid worsening the lung injury and damaging other organs.
The goal is to treat the underlying condition and keep the patient alive and
breathing.
Medication
Most medications prescribed during an ARDS episode treat the underlying
condition. Although corticosteroids have no proven benefit for early ARDS,
they may be beneficial 7 to 10 days following mechanical ventilation.
Sedating or muscle-paralyzing drugs are used during mechanical ventilation
to prevent resistance to the forced movement of air.
