I'll be around. I'd be happy to lead a URC ride on the Sat or Sunday if
people are interested. Distance/pace would be adjusted suitably for
whoever turns up.

I had just looked at the map and realised that it would be just over 400k to
get there. With camping gear on the MTB and a few ranges of hills to cross
it could be an interesting and slow ride..

I would say it is highly advisable.
Otherwise there is a risk you may find yourself camped amongst the
petrol cans and televisions.

A few years ago, my friend arrived unbooked and had to put his tent up
amid the cars. The lightweight section was full.

I think with the camping, it depends when you get there. We usually
arrive on the Friday afternoon and have never had a problem getting a
pitch, but I've heard of people turning up on the Saturday and not
getting in to the lightweight section.

There's nowhere to leave it except in your tent. Plenty of space to
lock it though.

If you do come down and want somewhere really secure to keep it, drop
me a line. There's some nice riding round here.

I haven't.

I have cycle-camped at more than a dozen rallies. Usually held bike
upright with guy lines and tent pegs and then locked bike. Of course,
such a bike could be lifted, but maybe potential thieves are deterred by
having to walk longish distances in full view of many Rally-goers.

My name was on my machine in biggish letters.

The campsite is patrolled by security vans at night. I don't think any
other nocturnal motor vehicle movements are allowed.

The mad idea is to leave on the thursday before lunch and ride through to
York, aiming to arrive in good time for the start and a rest before the
leg-restorer run in the evening.

This is a really mad idea with the proposed route of Dundee-Edinburgh
paralleling A92 most of the way, Coldstream, near Alnwick as there is a 24hr
truck stop and follow the general line of the A1 south as there will be lots
of refuelling opportunities (and bail onto a train options as well).

So if you fancy being absolutely crazy and riding through, it'll be a mere
350k for you as I'll have doen 100k getting to Edinburgh.

And with camping gear there is also the option of calling it a night
wherever and pitching up.

Annoyingly my boss is away that week so I can't get the time off. I'll
have to be content with taking the train down on Friday night and back
on Sunday.

The ride sounds fun. I was planning to do something similar last year,
but once again couldn't get the time off.

Saturday. I will be cycling there with my tent on board. I've booked a
plot but so far heard nothing back, nothing back for the ride yet
either.

Depends if I've got any legs left after I get there. If I do ride down it
will be on the MTB so any ride will not be quick (though I will have the
gears to ride up Rosedale Chimney without getting out of the saddle, if I
can keep the front wheel on the ground).
