I'm required to get a notebook as my primary machine for development at thid
company. I looked into those "Desktop replacement" notebooks and those are
just too large to carry around (I take it home every night and have to
travel with it). So I found that to get anything that is reasonably slim and
light some sacrafices have to be made. I ordered a HP nc6000 with a 2 GHz P4
Mobile, but it couldn't be delivered in time and they couldn't give me an
ETA so I cancelled that order (old notebook is dying).
I ended up with a Dell Inspiron 600m, 2 GHz P4 mobile, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard
drive. To get the things I needed (good docking station that would support
multi-monitor setups correctly and smallish size) I had to go with the more
home-based Inspiron rather than the business-aimed Latitude.
So far I'm happy with it. It runs VS.net 2003 comfortably with a bunch of
other stuff running and I could drop another gig of ram in if I bog it down.
I had planned to stay away from Dell because their notebooks have
historically not been that reliable, but they were the only ones who could
ship to my specs right away. Time will tell if it was a good choice or
not...

this. I can't use notebooks because in the three I've had prior to
this, they last 1 year and 1 day (just after the warranty). I'm too
rough on them.

I have never had good luck with Dell laptops or desktops. I tried
giving them another chance last year, but the machines fried within six
months. I've created an entirely HP (was Compaq) environment here.

I know, I know. I'm nervous of the Dell notebook myself. I've personally
seen more than a couple of lemons in the past. I really hope they are better
now (as is being claimed). I needed it NOW and nobody else could provide. I
did get the three year warranty, so that's some peace of mind, but I sure
hope I won't need it!
In my days as an Admin and VAR I've generally had good fortune with Dell
desktops and servers and a pretty mixed history with their notebooks.
Hopefully this one will start to change my opinion for the better.

I can't really imagine anyone holding this photo up for criticism of the
subject. I'm sure it wasn't posted with that in mind. The girl is
conventionally attractive, and in no way repulsive, which is what I
think the F-ing Elvis is trying to imply.

It seems to me most people of all genders grow out of their extremely
judgemental phase, somewhere around puberty. I assume F-ing Elvis is
below the chronological age, or stuck below it socially and
psychologically, and that one day he will realize his folly and be
tortured by a need to apologize to all and sundry for his offensive
acts.

T'would be a pity indeed. Perhaps when he finishes high school
things will start to look up for him.

When I was 15 years old it was inconceivable to me that anyone
over 40 would ever look attractive to me. Now, at age 58,
I find that my 57 year old wife (of 36 years) looks lovelier than
ever. It's amazing how women get more beautiful as I get
older.

We had a load of HP / Compaq E800's at my last company. Absolute toss, we
binned pretty much all of them within 18 months and replaced them with
Fujis. The Dells we had better luck with, and the Dell desktop I had was
(surprisingly) fantastic.

I'm now running a dual Xeon HP machine at new $work and it's forever
crashing. Although that could be the OS...

My Olympus C5050 seems to have developed a hot pixel - a white spot that
shows up fairly clearly. Unfortunately, when I try the pixel remapping
function of the camera, the spot remains.

Unless someone can tell me of tricks to get the remapping to work better,
I guess it is off to pay Olympus a huge amount of money. Sigh.
