I got one of those sets, the rear red flasher is fine for being seen,
the front light is also ok for being seen (particularly in flash mode)
and the batteries last a long time, but the beam isn't bright enough to
cast any useful amount of light onto the road if you want to see with
them.
Another good ebay deal is the 28 LED bike light from Hong Kong, $20
including shipping.
Its very bright and does the job for moderate speed riding on streets
that are somewhat lit, but the beam isn't all that focused and a lot of
the light goes off to the sides. My current quest for a bright light
was inspired by my "series of unfortunate events" ride, which took me
up a number of unfamiliar and unlit and often steeply downhill bike
paths. At 30-40km/h its not enough light if there is no other light.
I've got one of the 28 LED lights as well as the above product on my
handlebars.
The biggest downside of it is the batteries, it only runs on 3 AAA
batteries and it often drains a set of freshly charged 950mAH AAAs in
the time it takes me to ride home, hence I carry a set of spares with
me.
If I go ahead with building a light (though the $99NZ dual lamp set on
this thread is making me seriously consider not bothering) I'll
probably also wire the head of my 28LED torch into a pack of 3 AA
batteries and use it as a "low beam".
If I buy the commercial one though, I think I'll probably velcro the
28LED one to my helmet and use it that way.
