We have an understanding with regards to buying playthings. As long as we
have money for bills and rent/mortgage what we do with the rest is up to us.
This may change when we have kids (probably will) but we both have our
spendy vices so that cuts both ways. And Tim, no you've not met her. I
should get her along to Goat one night though.

Oh dear, very bad attitude.
"I do bicycles" was on of those things that I was most adamant about
when we were getting married. "You can come or stay at home".

lol, and yes, she did get the old bike at first.

Please don't make the mistake of intending to give your kids "everything
we missed out on when we were kids" - definitely is not character building.

I tought my wife, who had never even sat on a bike, to cycle about a year ago. I bought her a really nice allbeit a little heavy Trek 4700 with a 8 speed internal rear hub. She now rides a groovy burgundy 9sp road bike...

She said to me the other day "Have you seen those Sarah Ulmer bikes... I'd love one of those... I hear the new SUB Zero Pro will have a carbon frame with full Dura Ace and Zipp wheels.... Close your mouth Dom"

Congrats! There must be something in the water, 'cos Perry finally married me on the weekend. So far it's had a dreadful effect on my cycling, as we skipped the final time trial, due to being... otherwise occupied.

We were engaged for ten years, and he's always been really good with letting me buy cycling bits. The trick is to either keep individual purchases to a couple of hundred dollars or so, and thus get them under the radar, or else to imply there's some safety reason for needing those new Record hubs, or whatever. He hadn't ridden a bike when we met, and I've got him to the point where he'll ride in super-safe areas (think rail trail at Bright), but it's been an up-hill slogg.

Anyway, hope you have many years of domestic bliss.

Funny that, we waited 10 years too, all the while me riding the bike and
getting home too late to bother asking the question! Married for 6
years now with two little boys and bikes in the shed. Still just me
that rides 'em, but we have an understanding :-)

Congratulations

I have found that houses tend to be more time consuming than any of the other aspects of matrimonial life, there is always something to be done around them.

A note of caution, be wary of tandems. Full of enthusiasm I took my dearest out on one. I probably didn't have a full understanding of the challenges for the stoker who can't steer and has a limited view forward. The stoker has a very different experience when leaning through corners ect. She hasn't been on one with me since (even though I made one). In contrast my 11yo daughter quite likes it.

Since then I have seen advice that if you are a new captain, it is well worth going out as stoker with an experienced captain so a to get a full understanding of how different being a stoker is, and how to treat them well
