Could be Melb Water’s sewage overflow from Merri creek (that goes into the Yarra).
Problem with some commercial & residential properties – predominantly in the North of the city – have illegally run their stormwater into the sewer. The sewer is not designed to take storm water & what stormwater currently does illegally get into the sewer can cause a breech in the system in heavy downpours that overflows into Merri Creek ( and then the Yarra).
There’s no fix for it as it has to go somewhere.Just something I heard, not sure if it’s 100%.

Maybe, Craigster. There was a huge number there a couple of mornings ago. The gums in Bellbird park and the golf course on the other side were black with them. I've never seen so many in the one place. -

the little buggers. More friendly and less noise than the glah(?)
things from back home...cheers,

Makes all those diesel particles seem like a good option 😉I rode to the city via Burwood Rd to go to the MBTC meeting, and there
was a putrid smell between the Burwood rd/Bridge rd "intersection"
(east of the river), and a km or so towards Swinburne. I was thinking
bats - I don't recall any smell over the river.--

The stink was only between the Swan st bridge + Burwood rd/Bridge rd for couple of kms, near Scotch college?
Someone mentioned the rotting dead eels but reckoned they should have been washed away by now.
