Yahoos Throwing Things?

Last one I personally remember was a beer or soda can being thrown at me,
roughly in 1975.
I was on a club ride last year when some yahoo threw something inaccurately
near another rider.
That's not much. It's luckily pretty rare.

Called the cops on one guy this weekend. He threw something at me last
month and missed. This weekend he buzzed by within 2 inches of me and then
threw something. The people walking on the sidewalk stated that they were
sure he was trying to hit me. Don't know the guy but he sure has taken a
dislike to me. Can't see why unless he figures I'm an easy mark. Most of
the folks that ride this park are young guys who could kick his ass. Guess
he figures a middle aged woman is fair game. Got a partial on his plate
filed a report and hope he rides buy just one more time so I can have him
arrested for attempted assault. Jack Ass.

Once in the last 30 years or so. It simply doesn't happen all that
often IME.

In the last five years, this has happened once -- some idiots through a big
cup (like you get when you supersize your order) of coke at me while I was
struggling up the hill on Main Street.

I get cigarette butts - still lit - flicked at me all the time, but I
figure it's unintentional. The targeting, that is, not the littering.
This happens in urban communting traffic.

One of these days, though, I'm going to be wearing my full-fingered
leather gloves and catch one of them still lit, and flick it back
through the window of the offending car, and yell "You dropped this!"

About 15 years ago some guys in a van threw a half-eaten bag of chips at
me. It landed 10 feet ahead of my front wheel. To this day I don't know
why they threw out that perfectly good bag of chips. It must have been
galling to have missed me by so far and to have wasted their munchies
without the satisfaction of having hit anything. (I guess the ballistics
of chip bags are hard to judge at speed.)

Other than that the only thing hurled at me has been invective, and
that's lessened over the years. Either I look meaner than I used to, or
motorists are becoming more civilized around cyclists. 🙂

I passed a car that was stoppped at a stop sign and they honked
at me as I went in front of them (I was in the right of way on
the street perpendicular to them, amongst rush hour traffic).
Scared the [censored] outta me because I didn't expect it. Then, once
they got through the stop sign, they turned down the street I was
heading and honked again, yelled F you and gave me the finger.
Like, what did I do to [censored] them off so bad? Are there some
people out there that just hate cyclists? Are we merely 5 points
to them if they run us over?

Some young kid (teenager, probably) SPIT at me from the front passenger
seat. He missed. I laughed. I probably should have been offended but
it was just so ridiculous to SPIT at someone that I had to chuckle.

Several (~30) years ago I had an orange thrown in my direction from a
car travelling the opposite way. It missed by about ten feet.

Last winter or maybe it was early this spring I had two small opened
plastic containers of McDonalds' dipping sauce thrown at me. I ran
over one of them and got some BBQ sauce on my rear tire and rim.

A couple of years back;; some kid doused me with a bottle of some soft
drink. Then the driver took off. One big problem. At the light up ahead
there was some problem, so they could not go. I caught them there.

I reached in and pulled the kid in the passenger seat right out the window.
He just about had a heart attack.

He kept saying "I'm sorry, I didn't see you" so I cooled off.

Best thing is to memorize the guys plate number, when you get a chance,
write it down, with a description of the driver, car and the memorized
plate number, grab a couple of coffees then pay a nice visit to the
officer at the front desk at the local constabulary.... Best if you
have the object that hit your bike, as well. Yahoo then gets a visit by
a constable wondering why he assaulted the nice cyclist. :-)

Actually, someone flicked a butt out his window a while back while he was in
the straight-through lane and I was to his left, in the left turn lane. I
picked it up, said something like, "oh no, you dropped something -- here!"
and popped it back into his car. At first he looked grateful, then sour when
he realized what it was. The light turned green and I took off, so that was
the end of that interaction.

Anyway, I think the key is not to laugh evilly, but to be genuinely
concerned -- the person clearly did not mean to litter, did s/he? Of COURSE
not! This must have been an accident on their parts, and you're just being
nice and helpful.

Twice in the last year. A bottle or can I believe. Both times I was
riding on a tandem with my wife. And both times it came from what
appeared to be the same car, a small gray or silver hatchback. Neither
time did he (or she) hit us (fortunately), and neither time did I get
the license plate (unfortunately).

Some people are just asses. And their king appears to drive a small
gray or silver hatchback.
