Felt rather nervous for this crit, being the last I wanted to go out with a bang. The butterflies were getting a fair old run, but I felt better than I did last week. Stuffed my chain up at the start, managed to get the derailler sorted before I rolled off for the start...so I thought, the bloody thing wouldn't change up into the big chain ring, and was grinding in the middle ring. Rolled around for half a lap, and eventually got the problem fixed..Thank goodness for the mechanical 1 lap out rule. Waited for D-grade to catch up, and rejoined the back of the group on the sweeper.

I decided this week to try and move up quicker than what I had been, and not sit at the back for too long, the idea was to avoid the constant accelaration up the hill and conserve a bit more energy if I could. Basically rolled around about middle of the pack for most of the race.

I saw the bloke in red move on the bell lap, and dutchy close behind. It wasn't my intention to move this early, but the gap was increasing over the crest, so I made my move and went over the line in third and in pursuit of Dutchy (I told you I'd be following your wheel hehe). Going over the sweeper the pack was chasing, but I still had about 5m grace. Swallowed up dutchy way to quickly, so I set my sights on the man in front, who had put the hammer down and now lead by about 30m going into the hairpin. My main thought was to get into that hairpin ahead of the chasing pack, when I hear some bloke cursing from behind, I later find out it was dutchy just sorting out a mechanical at the worst possible time.

Took the corner reasonably well, and could now see the bloke in front dying a very quick death, hit the front about halfway up the hill, and with the line in sight, I started to feel the pinch and sat down again grrrr, but then heard the encouragement from the BR guys to pick it up a notch, and I could sense someone bearing down on me. The line couldn't come quick enough for my first crit win 😄 😄 😄 Very happy, and a great way to end the season.

What was the final margin guys?

Dutchy was on for an envelope today, until that stupid chain 🙁
Also go jaz for a rippa effort in C-grade 🙂

ess summed it up. Guy took off 3/4 way up the hill and i realised he was gettinga BIG gap. I was setting for the pace to take off at the top, so it was happening about 200m before I was expecting (good ol' Dgrade bein so predicatable compared to what i read about in higher grades 🙄 .

So, Im thinkin' , thiss is it! If I can get onto his wheel, I can do my pre-race target of gettin to the hairpin in the first few and then see how hard I can blow up the hill. Get to top of hill and He is about 30m ahead but not pulling away as he looks back to see what his chances are. I look back at same time assuming I have kicked about 2-3 arses into gear and they wont be far behind.
Guy in front goes down around corner and yells back "for f#ck sake hurry up!" (or something to that effect). He/me realised we were way over commited and the only hope we had was doin it together. I was feeling really fired up at this stage cos lately this last 'over the top' is where the ess93's of this world have taken over and all of a sudden i have almost 'fallen' off the front and everyone else hasnt reacted. I must have been 25-30m in front of a very strung out bunch. didnt have time to recognise faces/jerseys.

Was a gal 2 weeks back filming with a camera (that looked eerily like SuzyJ's light!) mounted on her helmet to film whilst 'amongst it'.

How'd you drop a chain? Does Kew require the little ring or something?
You sure you can't pedal up that hill in big-big?
If it makes you feel any better BigS drops chains too 🙂 It's pretty
easy to catch and just flick the gear up (or down, as the case may be)
and it should be all good. It's only when you shift too far or pedal for
too long after you've pushed the chain right off the chainrings that
you're screwed..

The chain thing was deliberate, wasn't it? I thought the plan was all
along for one of the BR guys to ahem... block the pack from getting
through the hairpin?

But surely you learnt from last time not to sit back down? Good thing
the BR guys were there!

Anyways, good to hear. Wish I was there, but cirque du soleil was too
good.

Wow - reading those two reports was great! Excitement, drama, the agony of a mechanical at a crucial moment and a solid win to end the season for the BR'ers! Well played all round 🙂

First ride for a while tomorrow on a mate's Learsport something or other... insert obligatory grumble about bike shops here.

Did anyone watch the end of A Grade? Did that guy that broke away hold
them off or get swallowed. He was 35secs up at one stage but the pack
seemed to be catching him when I left.

He was caught and ended up mid field I think...

Later in the race, an A grader did the hairpin with a flat rear, almost
folded the rubber off the rim... he jumped off the bike and started
yelling "WHEEL" as he was walking back toward the bunch of onlookers..
we all thought he was explaining what happened.. but he was demanding
somebody give him a wheel to get back into the race.

Dutch pipes up with "I think the word you are looking for is PLEASE"..
which was spot on the money.. a C grader offers his rear wheel and Mr
Demanding gets on his way, crunching the cassette getting back into the
right gear.. call of the night then comes from Craigster... something
along the lines of "ohh, you wanted 10 speed?"...

I dont think I'm speaking just for myself here.. but A grader guy.. PULL

OK. confession time...
my plan (rather stupid in hindsight, and no, i dont need it pointed out thank you) was go round on little ring on penultimate lap (small, small or thereabouts), then change to big ring down the hill.
Well, that's where it all went wrong! lost it at front end and by the time i figured out why i wasnt pedallin as fast as i wanted to, chain was nicely ensconsed between crankarm and BB. Yes, i do realise its MY fault 😠

The aim i set with carl back in late Nov was to be competitive in D, and he added get into C. OS trip put a big dent in that but I guess Im back to where I was before I left. not sure about all this winter road stuff...

The BR 'spectator' leadout was about 20mins into the race after C and D
had gone up the hill... we had to position ourselves to see the finish 🙂

Glenvale Crescent, Mulgrave. (off Springvale Rd)
9am Sunday for C, D, E
10am for B and A (you wont need to worry about these 🙂)
